Dear Parents and Students,
Welcome to the Driver Education Program at
Croatan High School. Please take a moment to read this letter
thoroughly.
Our class schedule this session is weekdays from 2:45 pm to 5:45 pm beginning on
January 26, and concluding on February
6.
Students are expected to arrive
promptly and be prepared to begin class at 2:45. Students will be
released
promptly at 5:45 pm. It is imperative that
students have transportation from class each day. Students will not be
allowed
to remain at Croatan High School at any time after the class is dismissed. Therefore, students must have a
ride home promptly at 5:45 pm each day. Any student who does not
have a ride home at 5:45 pm will be dropped from class.
North Carolina law
requires that all driver education students have thirty (30) hours
of classroom instruction and six (6) hours
of behind the wheel.
Our class is scheduled for eleven days, three hours a day, for a total of thirty-three (33) hours. Therefore,
students can
only miss one day and get credit
for the class. You will be notified of the make-up date. The student
will not drive
until they have completed the 30 hours. It is important that you attend every session. If you miss two days you will need to
repeat
the entire course. There are no exceptions to this
rule. The courses are typically offered within a four to eight weeks
of each
other.
Driving times are at a premium; being limited
to the short periods after school and on Saturdays and School
Breaks. Needless
to say, the time lag between class time and driving may be
extensive. With the exceptions of slots opened by students who miss
classroom time; the driving order is determined by age.
The three after school sessions are from 3:00 - 5:00 and from
5:00 to 7:00 and then from 7:00 to 9:00 on Monday thru Friday. On Saturday the schedule is 9:00 am -
11:00 pm
and 11:00 pm - 1:00 pm
the from 1:00pm - 3:00 pm This schedule accommodates approximately 6 drivers per
week; thus, it takes nearly six (6) weeks to clear a
class on their behind the wheel
requirement. Every attempt will be made to provide the schedule in
advance on this web site; however,
I have little doubt
that it
will be in a constant state
of flux, so check back frequently. I
will call in advance of the scheduled time
to confirm our appointment. Please be certain that I am provided with an accessible
phone number.
Although this class is after school, all school
rules
and policies apply in both the classroom and behind the wheel
sessions.
In addition to the rules and regulations set forth by Carteret County
Schools and/or Croatan High School, the following rules
apply to
this Driver Education Course. Students must be under the direct supervision
of the driver education instructor at
all times; therefore, students
are not allowed to leave the premises at any time. Students are not allowed
to use electronic
devices during instructional time. Students will
not be allowed to access any off-task items such as cell phones,
mirrors,
makeup, I-pods, etc. during instructional time. The content
of this course should be taken seriously by the student. Evidence
to the contrary will
lead to their dismissal from the class. If a student chooses to
sleep in class; the will not be allowed
to return until a future session is
offered. The instructor reserves the right to dismiss a
student from class at anytime between
day one and the final day of class for infractions to any
aforementioned guidelines or any other misconduct.
Students are highly encouraged to be attentive
and take notes. The material covered in class will be tested.
Success will be based primarily on a final exam. If the
average is
below 70 - they will not be scheduled to drive. The student will
need to repeat the classroom session.
Motivation and work ethic are appreciated; however, the reality
remains that students
must possess the knowledge to operate safely on
the roadways in order to drive. On-line
study quizzes are available on this
web-site. It is highly recommended that
students take notes and practice the quizzes to ensure proficiency.
Respectfully,
James Butler
