Geometry

The Geometry course at Croatan High School is constructed on problem-based learning(PBL), which is a teaching and learning strategy designed to place students in contextual  and inquiry-aligned learning situations that support classroom learning of mathematics mechanics with real-world applications. Students are given a problem in story format, something to which they can relate that shows up in the real world, and then must determine which formulas or other mathematical manipulations can be applied to solve the problem. In Glencoe Geometry, the student will experience PBL in several ways ;

Primary Textbook ;

Boyd, Cindy J ..etal.. Geometry , Westerville : Glencoe/McGraw Hill..  2004 .

Calculator ;

A classroom set of TI-84 Plus  calculators will be available for student use in the classroom. If you want to purchase a calculator for your own personal use or to use at home , I would suggest the TI-84 Plus , the TI-83 Plus, or the TI-89 (classroom support by the instructor will be limited for the TI-89 calculator).

Notebooks :

Each student should keep a 3-ring notebook (2 inches at least) for exclusive use in this course. Based upon the design of this course , the student should organize it into sections for Postulates/Theorems, notes, worksheets, homework assignments, quizzes/test/projects , bonus assignments, and EOC practice.

Workbooks & Study Guides :

Each student will receive a practice workbook and study guide to be used on a daily basis in this course. After each day's assignment is complete, the student should hand-in the entire workbook and/or study guide to be checked for completeness and accuracy, and a daily grade will be given for each.

Assignments ;

Assignments must be done in pencil on standard loose-leaf paper. The students name, assignment section(s) and a list of problems should appear in the top right-hand corner of the first page of the assignment. A student who uses more than one sheet of paper to complete an assignment should be careful to arrange the papers in proper order and staple them together in the top left-hand corner. Students should be careful to display all work neatly on the homework paper. Merely writing down the final answer is almost never acceptable. After completing an assignment, final answers should be checked with the back of the  book (when appropriate). All worksheet assignments will be checked by the teacher to see if the assignment is complete and correct. Students who are encountering difficulty should seek extra help from the teacher. Assignments will be graded on a 100-point scale. Any assignment not turned in will receive a grade of zero. With rare exceptions, assignments consisting only of answers will also receive a grade of zero. Unless there are extenuating circumstances, late assignments will also receive a grade of zero.

Quizzes/Tests :

A quiz (announced or unannounced) will occur once or twice every chapter. A chapter test given at the completion of each chapter will also be given to each student.

Optional Projects :

Each student may be asked to be responsible for a project during each of the 6-weeks period. The teacher will assign an appropriate topic to each student, and a rubric describing the project's format will be given to each student. The grade on the project will be counted as a test grade for that 6-weeks period.

Grades (per 6-weeks) :

Tests(50%) , Quizzes (20%) , Homework (20%) , Notebooks(10%)
