English I Curriculum |
| The English curriculum for freshmen is based
on the North Carolina English Language Arts Standard Course of
Study and the Carteret County Instructional Curriculum Guide
for English Language Arts Grade 9. The Croatan High
School English Department has structured a program designed to challenge
skilled students and to prepare all students for success in college,
community college, or technical school.
Students in English I explore the ways that audience, purpose, and context shape oral communication, written communication, and media and technology. While emphasis is placed on communicating purposes of personal expression, students also engage in meaningful communication for expressive, expository, argumentative, and literary purposes. Students will take the North Carolina English I End of Course Exam as their final assessment in the spring. The first part of the exam is editing student essays, and the second part of the exam is reading and analyzing literature. Since a student with an adequate knowledge of literary terms will not be able to analyze the readings, I suggest that students read and study their notes on a daily basis. In other words, students will always have homework even if the homework does not require them to write. The most helpful action a parent can take is to encourage his/her child to review frequently both the literary terms and the editing notes in his or her notebook.
