Students will choose 10 vocabulary words currently being used in one of their academic classes and write a sentence using each.

 

Tuesday

Same as Monday, with a choice of 10 different words.

 

Wednesday:

Students use five vocabulary words chosen on Monday and Tuesday in an original composition

 

Thursday: Study Skills

 

Friday: Journal

Study Skills: English language irregular words.
Journal: What's my outlook? Do I embrace new experiences or do I avoid the unfamiliar and stick to what I know?

9/2-9/5

No Study Skills: Four day week
Journal: What would you do if a neighbor gave you a map of the neighborhood with an X marking the spot where a hidden treasure was supposedly buried?  Describe in detail the steps you would take after receiving the map.

 

9/8-9/12

Study Skills: Definitions from context clues

Journal: After discussion about California's diverse geography:  If you were a tourist in California, what would you want to see? Where would you want to go? What would you want to do?  If you've been to California already, write about your experiences.

9/15-9/19

Study skills:  Context Clues

Journal: Sept. 15th is a national holiday in Japan.  It's known as "Old People's Day" or "Respect for the Aged Day".  Write about an elderly person that you know.  This should be someone you look up to and respect.  It can be a friend, relative, neighbor, or someone else you know.  Tell about this person and why he or she deserves to be honored.

9/22-9/26

Study skills: Context Clues

Journal: Write about your favorite apple dish. (Apple pie, apple strudel, apple muffins, apple bread, etc.)  How is it prepared? Who prepares it best?  When is your favorite time to eat it?

 

9/29-10/3

Study Skills: Context Clues

Journal: The comic strip "Peanuts" first appeared in October, 1950.  One of Charlie Brown's favorite sayings is "Good Grief"!  Write two or more of your favorite sayings and tell when you usually say them.

10/6-10/10

Study skills: Context Clues

Journal: Write about something you taught yourself to do.  Tell why you wanted to learn it in the first place.  If you haven't ever taught yourself to do anything, what would you like to learn?  Could you teach yourself to do it?  How?

 

10/13-10/17 Thursday: individual conference with students
Friday: Write an original poem or song with your choice of theme

 

10/20-10/24 Study skills: Context clues
Journal: Describe how your life has changed since you were 10 years old. Have your responsibilities changed?  Are things easier or harder for you than they were then?

11/3-11/7

Study Skills: Context Clues

Journal: The Earl of Sandwich invented the idea of making something to eat while he continued to play cards because he didn't like stopping for meals.  What is your favorite sandwich?  Write a recipe with the exact directions for making your sandwich. Start by listing the ingredients, then tell how you put them all together.

11/10-11-14 Monday-Friday:  Get ready for 100 word vocabulary test on Friday.
11/17-11/21

Study Skills: Context Clues

Journal: Write about an all-day (or almost all-day) project you did around your home. Maybe you cleaned the basement or your closet. Maybe you built something.  Maybe you helped with Christmas decorations. Maybe you cooked or baked all day.  Explain in detail what you did.
