Private Study

The quality of the musical ensembles at Croatan High School is reflected in the quality of its members. Every student musician plays a vital role in the success of the program. To this end, all instrumental music students at Croatan High School are encouraged to seek private instruction on their respective instruments. There is no substitute for weekly sessions of individualized instruction by an instrument specialist. Private lesson instructors serve as an ideal model and mentor to assist in improving the areas of tone, technique, and general musicianship. There are several excellent private teachers throughout the region including a major university school of music at East Carolina University in Greenville, NC. Croatan High School Bands also offers weekly lessons with excellent teachers, at the high school, for a very reasonable rate.

Chamber Music

In an effort to provide a complete music education for our students, the Croatan High School Bands incorporate numerous chamber music groups to which each student musician is assigned.

Improvisation

One component of the North Carolina Standard Course of Study is improvisation. Materials used include Shelton Berg's Chop Monster series, the Jamey Aebersold Play-A-Long series, Bob Mintzer's Jazz, Blues, and Funk Play-A-Long books, and the Real Book(s) by Hal Leonard and Sher Music.

STEP-UP MOUTHPIECES
All students are encouraged to purchase step-up mouthpieces for their instrument. They cause a noticeable improvement in the quality of sound produced by the player and are an appealing option when compared to the cost of a step-up or professional grade instrument. A beginner instrument with a step-up mouthpiece will often sound more like a professional horn. A professional horn with a beginner mouthpiece can sound like a beginner horn. A complete list of recommended mouthpieces is given below:
Clarinet: Vandoren B-45
(*with a Rovner ligature)
Bass Clarinet: CM 344
(* with a Rovner ligature)
Alto Saxophone: Selmer C*
(*with a Rovner ligature)
Tenor Saxophone: Selmer C*
(*with a Rovner ligature)
Baritone Saxophone: Selmer C*
(*with a Rovner ligature)
Trumpet: Bach 1 1/2 C or Benge 3C
F Horn: Holton Farkas MC or MDC
Euphonium: Bach 6 1/2 AL or Schilke 51
(check shank size)
Trombone: Bach 6 1/2 AL
(check shank size)
Tuba: Bach 18
**Saxophones, Trumpets and Trombones should consult a director/private teacher about choice for jazz mouthpieces.
** Students should not accept substitutions from music retailers without first checking with your band director. Be safe; buy the mouthpiece listed for your horn. Other specific (professional) mouthpieces may be recommended by private teachers as a better, more personal fit.

PERCUSSION EQUIPMENT
Percussion students are responsible for the purchase of sticks, mallets, and a mallet bag. A list of suggested purchases is given below:
Innovative Percussion Stick Bag
Use: Protect and carry sticks/mallets
1pr. Innovative Percussion IP-1 general snare sticks
Use: Snare Drum
2 pr. Innovative Percussion IP803 yarn wound mallets

Instructors/Coaches

We STRONGLY recommend that all students study with a private teacher. The lessons are not expensive and the small time commitment makes a MAJOR difference in a student’s ability to perform in the middle school and high school ensembles with a high degree of ability and, therefore, enjoyment.

We hope that parents enrolling students in this program will consider the commitment a serious one and endeavor to:
1. Honor the request for lesson fees to be paid once per month on the date of the first lesson of the month. Checks should be made out for the particular teacher and should be for the number of lessons occurring that month. (There will be no lessons on non-school days.)
2. Have students at lesson regularly and on time with the necessary materials. The staff, professionals on their respective instruments, are making a time commitment to us and doing so at a very reasonable price. (Most of them are traveling more than an hour and a half each time as well.) Your cooperation will help us to maintain our excellent teaching staff.

Private Lesson Program
• Instruction will be under the supervision of Croatan High School Bands.
• The cost of lessons (which goes directly to the teacher) will be $12.00 per half hour.
• Fees must be paid in advance for one month directly to the instructor concerned. All lessons missed by the student without at least 48 hours notice must be paid for.
• Lessons will be held in the fine and performing arts classrooms at Croatan High School or at a location that the student's family and teacher can agree upon.
• Lessons begin in September and end in mid-June unless otherwise arranged with the individual teacher.

Below, you will find the names of our Croatan Conservatory staff as well as local private teachers. Please make contact with these teachers yourself to arrange lesson times. See Mr. Aldredge for assistance in contacting these individuals and setting-up lessons.
