Welcome to Carpentry 1.  My name is Elizabeth (Beth) Alexander and I am happy to have the opportunity to teach Carpentry 1 to your child this semester.

During the first few weeks, I will be covering measurement and all of the general safety procedures of the shop.  When I introduce a specific tool, the safety will also be included in the lesson at that time.  Prior to any work in the shop, each student will be required to pass a safety and measurement test (70%).

Please read the syllabus carefully.  There are updated items which include responsibilities for the tools and project materials.   Please let me know if you have any questions. You may reach me by email, beth.alexander@carteretk12.org or the school phone (252) 393-7022  ext. 1411.

I also have very large classes this semester (21-22 students).   There will be times when there is little room to work on projects.  I cannot do anything about the size of my classes; but, I will stress to you the importance of your child using safe practices.  He/she cannot be part of any horseplay and must work in a safe manner.  Consequences, disciplinary actions (included in the class rules), will result for any and all unsafe acts.  I cannot jeopardize your child’s health or any student’s health for unsafe/intentional acts.  Any student using unsafe practices will not be allowed to use the shop.

I am the sponsor for SkillsUSA, formally known as VICA.  Dues are $20.00 for the year.  This is a very valuable club which teaches leadership skills, problem solving techniques, team building, and much more. Please encourage your child to join.  More information is on my school web page and will be introduced in my classes as well.

My school web page, carteretcountyschools.org/chs/, includes weekly lesson plans, syllabus, 90 day plans, class rules, and email.  Click on Academics and then select Beth Alexander.  The Lesson Plans are updated every week and sometimes twice a week.

I also use egrades (Cougar Grades) to email progress reports, notes and new information to my students’ family.  You will be able to access your child’s grades any point of time.  Most grades are recorded within a couple of days.  Each individual child has a User name and password assigned to them.  You will need to use their information to access their grades.

Based on the usage of egrades, I will need the guardian’s/parent’s email address.  Please write you email address, sign and date this letter, and send it back promptly with your child.  If you do not have an email address, please indicate this on this letter.  I will also post this letter on my web page so you can access it if the original was misplaced.  If you have any concerns about your child, please record them also on this letter.

Thank you,

Beth Alexander
