I Love Lucy

The "I Love Lucy" show was very popular during the 1950s. Part of the "I Love Lucy" success was the real relationship between Lucille Ball and Desi Arnaz. The show ran in a period of TV history when married people slept in separate beds which would explain why on TV, women didn't get "pregnant." Expecting, maybe. So when Lucille Ball became pregnant with her second child in 1952, the network  worried about ratings and sponsors. But Lucy fought for and won the right to do "pregnant stories."

So on January 19, 1953, some 54 million people turned on their television sets to watch the famous episode, "Lucy Goes to the Hospital". Coincidentally, the show aired the exact same day that Lucille Ball actually went into labor. Sadly Arnaz and Ball had their problems and ended up getting divorced in 1960.
