County Public School SAT Scores Show Continued Gains
For the fifth consecutive year, Scholastic Assessment Test
(SAT) combined scores both increased and remained above the North Carolina
state average. As a group, the county's graduating class of 2004 recorded
a verbal score of 508 and a math score of 516, for a combined SAT score
average of 1024. The combined score was only 2 points below the national
average. The SAT verbal score of 508 matched the national average and was
9 points above the state average. The SAT math score of 516 was 2 points
below the national average and 9 points above the state average. Educators can best influence student performance on the SAT through focused instruction, teaching students how to think, stressing challenging coursework as the norm, offering SAT preparation, and setting high expectations for students across grade levels. It is also important to recognize that the basis for strong SAT scores is built in the early grade levels where students develop vocabulary, reasoning skills, and the ability to think mathematically. |
