Some
of these strategies include better utilization of the school’s Student
Assistant Team, fair and consistent enforcement of an effective school
discipline plan, increased opportunities for student internships and providing
unique extra-curricular activities for “at-risk” students such as the Video
Game Club.
Of
the forty-one students who dropped out of
Croatan
High School
during the 2003-2004 school year, thirty-two of these students indicated
attendance related issues were the reason they dropped out. The gender breakdown
for dropouts during 2003-2004 was equal with twenty females and twenty-one males
leaving school. A higher percentage of juniors dropped out than the other three
classes. Eleven of the dropouts were exceptional children including one
classified as academically gifted. The number of exceptional children dropouts
in 2003-2004 is an increase of four students from the 2002-2003 school year.
Improvements within Croatan’s Exceptional Children’s department include
strategies to improve scheduling and monitoring of those EC students who are at
the greatest risk of dropping out.
