Advanced Placement (AP) Tests -  Croatan offered and taught Advanced Placement (AP) courses in five subjects for the 2003-2004 school year.  Subjects taught were:  Biology, Calculus,  English Literature, European History, and US History. Fifty-two candidates took ninety-two tests. The number of tests taken increased by 24 and the number of candidates increased by 9 over the previous year. 

Biology – Eighty-seven percent (87%) of the students tested scored a level III or higher, a 12 percent increase over the previous year.  Sixty-two percent (62%) of the students scored a level IV or higher, a 20 percent increase over the previous year.  Twenty-five percent (25%) of the students scored a level V, an 8 percent increase over the previous year. 

Calculus BC – Ninety-four percent (94%) of the students tested scored a level III or higher, a 6 percent decrease from the previous year.  Seventy-five percent (75%) of the students scored a level IV or higher, a 6 percent decrease from the previous year.  Forty-four percent (44%) of students scored a level V, a 12 percent decrease from the previous year.

English Literature – Seventy-five percent (75%) of the students tested scored a level III or higher, an 18 percent decrease from the previous year.  Fifty percent (50%) of students scored a level IV or higher, a 5 percent decrease from the previous year.  Twenty percent (20%) of the students scored a level V, a 4 percent decrease from the previous year.

European History – Seven percent (7%) of the students tested scored a level III or higher, a 23 percent decrease from the previous year. Zero percent (0%) of the students tested scored a level IV or higher, a 16 percent decrease from the previous year.

US History – Sixty-five percent (65%) of the students tested scored a level III or higher, a 2 percent decrease from the previous year.  Twenty-four percent (24%) of students tested scored a level IV or higher, a 1 percent increase from the previous year.  Six percent (6%) of the students tested scored a level V, a 6 percent increase from the previous year.

EOC TESTS - Total End-of-Course (EOC) proficiency rates have shown consistent improvement over the last few years. For the 2003-2004 school year, Croatan achieved the School of Distinction , High Growth state recognition with a total proficiency of 88.8%, up from 85.2% in 2002-2003, and 82.9% in 2001-2002.

In the 2003-2004 academic year, six of the eight EOC subjects scored above 85% proficient: English 1(90.3); Algebra 1 ( 96.4); Algebra II (89.1); Geometry (87.6); Physical Science (88.2); Physics (100). By comparison, in the 2002-2003 school year, five of eight EOC subjects scored above 85% proficiency.     * US History and ELPS ( Economic, Legal, and Political Systems) End-of-Course tests were not administered for ABC's calculations during 2003-2004.

Proficiency rates have continued to improve in most areas. Relative to percentage points comparing the 2002-2003 to the 2003-2004 school years, Biology improved by 0.5%, English 1 by 3.0%, Geometry by 5.8%, Physical Science by 11.6%, while Physics maintained 100% proficiency.

Despite an overall proficiency rate of 88.8%, three areas saw declines. Algebra I declined by 0.5%, Algebra II by 4.2%, and Chemistry by 20.7% points.
