GUIDANCE PROGRAM

Bogue Sound's counselor is Mrs. Sharon Fulcher.  The students go to her room for guidance classes.  Listed below are lessons and activities that will be happening in our guidance program this year.  Not all of these activities go on in each grade level.  If you have any questions about the guidance program at BSE, please feel free to call the school and ask for Ms. Sharon.  We have monthly guidance lessons, small group counseling and individual counseling sessions as well.

Personal body safety and drug awareness classes are taught each year in each grade.  Other lessons include:  cooperation skills, and a Positive Kids program that enhances student self-esteem by enabling them to positively solve problems that they encounter.  This program gives them a sense of competence and confidence.  We also use a McGee and Me series that teaches:  being honest, the importance of family and friends, keeping the right perspective, the value of love and kindness, being responsible, being loyal and the meaning of commitment, and not trying to become someone you are not.  Other lessons include interpersonal effectiveness, manner, respect, positive attitudes, diversity, compassion, truthfulness, perseverance, dependability, initiative, bullying, dealing with criticism, anger with others and anger with self (our Cub Pride letters!).

Special Notes From The Counselor:
In this adult world of ours, we sometimes grow impatient over the struggles of our children to make themselves understood.  If we don't listen to what a child really has on his mind, we can completely miss our calling as parents.  The following memos from such a child underscore the confusion he experiences in his encounters with his elders.
~Don't be afraid to be firm with me.  I prefer it.  It makes me feel secure.
~Don't let me form bad habits.  I have to rely on you to detect them in the early stages.
~Don't make me feel my mistakes are sins.  It upsets my sense of values.
~Don't protect me from my consequences.  I need to learn the painful way sometimes.
~Remember that I feel badly let down when promises are broken.
~Don't be inconsistent.  That completely confuses me and makes me lose faith in you.
~Don't forget I love experimenting.  I couldn't get on without it, so please put up with it.
