I was raised in Havelock, and attended East
Carolina University, earning a degree in Geography. After college I spent 20 years in the US Navy serving aboard 4
nuclear submarines. During my military time, I earned a Masters in Public Administration
from Valdosta State University and took classes to become a middle
school teacher. I taught school in Camden County, Georgia for 5 years before moving
back to Eastern North Carolina. I've spent the last two summer as Carteret County
School's Teacher-Ranger-Teacher for The National Park Service, at Cape
Lookout National Seashore. I have four children: Kevin, Kyle, Ethan, and Laura. My Mom still
lives in Havelock and my girlfriend, Maria is a nurse in Carteret County.
