Material on this page should be memorized for mathematical success

 All 8th grade students need to master multiplication tables and memorize these formulas:

Area of a circle:     A = πr²                                                                    Percent of Change:  amount of change/original amount x 100

Circumference of a circle:     C = πd                                                    Percent Proportion:  %/100 = is / of

Area of a triangle:     A = 1/2 bh                                                          Area of a trapezoid:  A = 1/2 h ( b1 + b2 )

Area of a parallelogram:     A = bh                                                      Pythagorean Theorem:  a2 + b2 = c2      or     c2 - b2 = a2

Area of a rectangle:     A = lw                                                              Volume of a right prism:  V = Bh

Interest:     I = PRT                                                                                Volume of a cylinder:  V = πr²h

Distance:     d = rt                                                                                  Volume of a triangular prism:  V = (1/2 bh) h  

Mileage:  distance = rate of use x gallons of gas (d = rg)                  Volume of a rectangular prism:  V = lwh

Slope intercept:  y = mx + b                                                                 Volume of a cone or pyramid:  V = 1/3 Bh

Slope of a line:  ( y2 - y1) / ( x2 - x1 )                                                    Point-slope:  y - y1 = m (x - x1 )

                                                          

The perfect squares are:  1, 4, 9, 16, 25, 36, 49, 64, 81, 100, 121, 144, 169, 196, and 225.  Their square roots are: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12, 13, 14, and 15.

The first five prime numbers are:  2, 3, 5, 7, and 11.  There are divisibility tests that can be used to determine if these prime numbers are factors of other numbers.  Memorizing divisibility tests will help with prime factorizations, GCF and LCM, and factoring polynomials in high school.

Properties that need to be understood by 8th graders include:  Associative, Commutative, Distributive, Identity, Inverse, and Zero.
