Media Center Hours: 7:30 a.m. until 3:30 p.m.
Monday through Friday

The media center is to be used for studying, reading, and conducting research. We strive to be the center of all learning experiences by providing a comprehensive selection of materials that will encourage growth in knowledge. We aim to meet the needs of each student on his/her level and educate him/her according to our diverse school curricula, individual interests and abilities.

Media Center Schedule:

The media center will operate on a flexible schedule for all grades. English Language Arts (ELA) teachers will rotate their classes on a two-week basis. There should be adequate time for teachers to sign-up for additional class research. The sign-up schedule and calendar are located on the circulation desk. Teachers must give at least one (1) day advance notice and consult the media coordinator before scheduling their classes. If your research assignment requires the assistance of the media coordinator, please give at least three (3) days advance notice.

Open Checkout:

The media center will have open checkout throughout the day from 7:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Only English Language Arts teachers may send individual students or small groups of four (4) or less to checkout books. Students must have an appropriate pass written in their agenda to visit the media center. (If necessary, library passes will be provided and/or written in the agenda especially for before and after school study groups.)

Each student will place books that you are returning on the return cart when entering media center. (OR about 5 minutes before the class arrives, the teacher may assign one or two students the task of returning the books to the media center.) When checking out books or renewing books form a line in front circulation desk being cautious of groups entering or leaving CCC. If you are browsing for a book and remove it from the shelf, but decide that is not the one you want, please place it on the designated book cart/truck or table.

Research Groups:

Teachers may also send students to the media center for small group research unless a class is in the media center. Please limit the small groups to no more than four (4) students at a time. Any students wanting to use a reference book overnight should come to the media center to checkout the items after 1:00 p.m. Reference books must be returned to the media center by 7:45 a.m. the next morning. Reserves:

Students may reserve a book that may be hard-to-catch otherwise. There are several methods to reserve a book. (1) Use the Winnebago Spectrum 5 Circulation and Catalog System, (2) complete a reservation form located at the circulation desk, and/or (3) write in the reserve notebook (blue) located at the circulation desk.

Teachers may request in advance to have materials pulled and placed on reserve for class research. This is especially recommended when there are limited materials on a particular subject and if all students are expected to utilize the same sources to complete their research. Either you or your students may be asked to assist when pulling items.

Over Dues:

Library books, magazines and reference books should be returned before or by the due date in order to continue checking out materials and not to accrue a fine. As a middle school student, it is your responsibility to remember to return items that you have checked out. If these items are kept after the due date, a fine of $.10 (ten cents) a day will be charged for each overdue item. Overdue reference books accrue a fine of $1.00 (one dollar) a day for each day its late. Students will not be allowed to checkout any other items until all overdue items are returned and fines are paid.

Lost Items:

Students will be expected to pay a replacement cost for any lost items. Near the end of each nine-weeks, a letter will be sent home for any long overdue items with the replacement cost included. At the end of the year in June, a final list of lost and overdue items will be distributed to the faculty and staff.

New books are replaced at the exact purchasing price. Other lost items will be replaced as follows:

  • Hardbound book: $15.00

  • Paperback book: $7.00

Students and teachers can find all materials by using the basic author, title, subject, and keyword searches. Also, students will be able to access the on-line catalog from computers located in classrooms throughout the school.

Internet:

Students have access to the Internet from all computers in the media center and classrooms. If students wish to use the Internet for research purposes, they must complete, sign, and have their parents sign the Carteret County Acceptable Use Policy (AUP) form and return to BMS. Proof of Internet permission will also be denoted on the AUP page in the students agenda. If a student uses the Internet inappropriately, discipline action will be taken.

Agenda serves as Library Card/Internet Approval:

Students must be responsible, accountable, and remain "in charge " of their agenda because it serves many purposes. (1) Provides a record of each students patron and CCC number (which usually is the same number with only a few exceptions) (2) Proves that both the students and their parents have signed the Carteret County Schools Internet Acceptable Use Agreement for Internet Usage.

Do you understand the importance of your BMS agenda? Information in your agenda is confidential!
