Homework WEEK OF AUGUST 25 - 29TH Monday - Get to know you day!! Rules, regulations, lockers, changing classes every 50 minutes, etc. Are you tired yet? So are your kids!! Tonight go through your day and organize your thoughts! Go to bed early and get some rest! Welcome to the sixth grade and Beaufort Middle. Tuesday - Today students will fill out a questionaire. This serves several purposes and will be for my eyes only. I have asked students to bring in a magazine of choice. This is for a class activity that we will be doing on Wednesday. Wednesday - Students will use their magazines today to make a collage of pictures to show a theme. This totally a student led project. If not completed we will complete on Thursday during the first half of class. Thursday - We will complete collages, students will show and tell their theme, and then we will begin our quest to answer the question: What is Science? Students will list 5 characteristics of a scientists. Students will then draw a picture using their list as a guide. Friday - We will work on our final drawings that will show characteristics of a scientist. Our goal will be to complete drawing and have it ready for posting. Have a great weekend and remember we have Monday, September 1st off to observe Labor Day. We will be anxious to see you on Tuesday, September 2nd. WEEK OF SEPTEMBER 1ST - 5TH Monday - Labor Day Holiday! No School Tuesday - This week we will do several exercises to get acquainted with our science textbook! Students are asked to preview their book by looking through it and seeing the many different things they will be learning about this year. We will begin with Chapter 1. Wednesday - We will be looking at our Science World magazines at the front side of our class today. This is a source of information that our students will be reading to gain information that is not in there science book. There is an article in this issue that gives a scenerio about what would happen to New York City if it was hit with a major hurricane. Students will read and answer question pertaining to this story. Also students will receive a textbook inventory worksheet to answer. This is due on Thursday. Thursday - Today we will begin by answering questions about last nights homework and this will lead us into the discussion on How to use your textbook. Tonight students should read pages xxiv-xxix. This is the beginning of Safety in the Science Classroom. Friday - Students will be discussing safety in the science classroom and looking at the symbols that illustrate what the precautions are. Have a safe weekend!!!!! WEEK OF SEPTEMBER 8TH - 12TH Monday - Students will be completely their final design of the safety symbol of their choice. We will then match with a fellow student for display. Tonight they should review the symbols for a quick quiz on Tuesday. Tuesday - Quiz on Safety Symbols and students will begin Chapter 1. Tonight students should read and complete Directed Reading Worksheets for Chapter 1 Section 1. Some students expressed an interest in working ahead in the chapter. This is okay because we have really talked the material in this chapter over the past 2 weeks. There are some vital beginning items in this chapter for example the safety symbols, scientific method, and tools of science. The worksheets are to make sure that all students are reading the material. Also please note the vocabulary highlighted in yellow. Students are also responsible for these. In section 1 the is only one, science. Wednesday - Friday --We will be continuing our trip through chapter one. Students should be working on the material handed out on Tuesday. In class we will be looking at and learning how to use the tools of science. On Friday we will have a test on tools and rules. WEEK OF SEPTEMBER 15TH - 19TH Monday - Correction from Friday of last week. Due to illness and life we did not have our test on tools and rules. We are continuing our study this week. Students were not completely ready. Students should have all directed reading worksheets completed by Tuesday. Tuesday - Mrs. Lawrence out due to illness. Mrs. Smith will be working with students on the chapter review at the end of chapter 1. Students will have class time to work on this. Wednesday - Today we will look at the tools of Science. Students will be given a handout with the tools and their proper names. They should be learning these ready to be tested by Friday of this week. Students should know the tool, what it finds, and the metric unit that would used to express the measurement. Tonight they should also look at the table on page 24 to review what was done in class today. Thursday - Today we will practice matching tool with use with metric measure. Friday - If ready we will test on tools, rules, and safety symbols, Chapter One. Have a great, safe weekend!! WEEK OF SEPTEMBER 22ND - 26TH Monday - Friday - This week we will be looking at measurement using the Metric System. Students should be able to know the tool, what they are measuring with the tool, what metric unit they will express the measurement with and how to abbreviate the unit. We will concentrate on the metric ruler and meter stick for the majority of the week. WEEK OF SEPTEMBER 29th - October 3rd Monday we will wrap up measurement activities from Friday. Students will begin Chapter 2 - What is a Mineral? by looking at the key terms from chapter 1. Tuesday we will discuss a variety of ways to practice learning (not memorizing) the meanings of words. In class we will do an activity that will show students the difference between organic and inorganic things. Homework will be the Directed Reading Work Sheet for Section 1. Wednesday we will go over homework and answer questions that may be confusing to students. We will discuss the vocabulary and how it pertains to the reading content. In 5th period we will do an activity to work on cooperative learning groups. In 6th we will do an activity that will help students to remember the tools and spellings of Science. Homework? Quiz on Section 1. Thursday we will take a quiz on Section 1 and then we will begin our in class study of minerals. This will include several small projects that will be done here. On Monday October 13 we will be going to the computer lab and do a mineral data base to help our sixth graders practice their computer skills while learning about minerals. Homework - students will need to do the vocabulary for Chapter 2 Section 2. Friday will be a continuation of Thursday. Have a great weekend and if you are going to the Seafood Festival have a great but safe time. Go by the ECHS athletic boosters booth and buy a shrimp burger. See you on Monday!! WEEK OF OCTOBER 6TH - 10TH Monday - Friday - This week we will be completing Chapter 2. Students should have all work completed by Tuesday October 14th. This week we will be looking at the 7 properties of a mineral, uses, where do these minerals come from, and how do we get them. Students have a short quiz after each section, so it is good to review vocabulary and Directed Reading Work Sheets nightly. WEEK OF OCTOBER 13TH - 17TH Monday we will be going to the Lab to work on a mineral database and to also practice our computer skills. Working with Mrs. McLendon will help students have a better understanding of just how much material there is to look at. Students should study and review all material for Chapter 2. They will be testing on Tuesday. Tuesday - Test on Chapter 2!! Homework students will begin their study of ROCKS by looking up new terms for Section 1 of Chapter 3. Wednesday - Students will receive their work pages for Chapter 3 along with the rest of the vocabulary. We will be working on these at home because there are some in class activities that we will be working on in class. Thursday - Continuing with Rocks, Rock Cycle, 3 types of rocks (Igneous, Sedimentary, and Metamorphic. Friday - Same as Thursday! Please call if your child's agenda is not clear. Have a super weekend!! WEEK OF OCTOBER 20TH - 24TH Monday through Friday we will be continuing our study of the 3 types of rocks and the rock cycle. Students are responsible for a section each night and do their Directed Reading work sheets that match. Friday students will receive their reward for selling BBQ tickets. Have a great weekend. WEEK OF OCTOBER 27TH - 31ST Monday - We will begin to review for Chapter 3 test. Students will also begin to do cooking activities to compare this to the rock types and the rock cycle. Tuesday - Same as Monday Wednesday - Test on Chapter 3 Thursday - We will begin to look at Plate Tectonics, Chapter 4. Their homework will be written in their agenda. Friday - Today is our first early release day. Students will be released at 12:00 noon. Have a safe Halloween!! Please remember to leave all candy home, enjoy it there. Thank you and we will see you on Monday, November 3rd. WEEK OF NOVEMBER 3RD - 7TH Monday - Friday - This week we will be studying about the Tectonic Plates. Students are responsible for all key terms in each section 1-4. They need to be able to label the layers of the earth, explain continental drift, the theory of plate tectonics, and convergent, divergent, and transform boundaries. We are working on houses, garages, and cars this week in class so that students can identify materials from the earth and how they are used in their everyday lives. I will take up definitions on Thursday and return on Friday so that they will have them to study for their "Open Book Test" on Monday. Please know that the first 9 weeks REPORT CARD go home on Friday, November 7th. Have a great weekend and remember we have school on Monday and Tuesday is a holiday - VETERAN'S DAY HOLIDAY, no school. WEEK OF NOVEMBER 10TH - 14TH Monday - Friday - This week we will continue our study by learning about plate tectonics and plate boundaries. Please remember that Tuesday is a holiday due to Veteran's Day! Please pause and thank a Vet for the freedoms that we enjoy!! The students will see a tie in to plate tectonics. Wednesday we will test on Chapter 4 (open book) and on Thursday we will study earthquakes. Students should do and study the key terms for chapter 5, there are 12 new terms. We are going to do the directed reading work pages for this chapter and they will be worked on in and out of class. Key terms are due on Thursday, Section 5-1 is due on Friday, Sections 5-2 and 5-3 are due by Monday. There will be a vocabulary activity to help students practice the vocabulary. We have also finished our houses, garages, and cars. We will putting these on display for anyone who would like to see them. Have a great weekend and come ready! We have lots to do before we break for Thanksgiving!! WEEK OF NOVEMBER 17TH - 21ST Monday - Friday - This week we will complete Chapter 5 "Earthquakes" and begin our study of Chapter 6 "Volcanoes". Students should have Chapter 5 DRWS turned in by Tuesday. Tuesday we will discuss how earthquakes affect society and students will do a short crossword puzzle to work with and practice vocabulary. Wednesday students will do a self check on homework, do any corrections that are needed. We will do a short quiz on vocabulary by matching definitions with words. If time allows we will view a short video on earthquakes. Homework will be the key terms (vocabulary) for Chapter 6. The rest of the week we will be reading and discussing volcanoes. Please remember that there is a celebration in the cafeteria on Friday for those students that made honor roll and principal's list. This begins at 8:30. WEEK OF NOVEMBER 24TH - 26TH This is a three day week! We have completed our shrink art to decorate the Christmas Tree. We will complete Chapter 6 on Wednesday and Test on vocabulary Tuesday, Dec. 2nd. WEEK OF DECEMBER 1ST - 5TH Monday we will complete our shrink art and review vocabulary terms for Chapter 6. Tuesday we will test on these 8 terms and begin Chapter 7 - Weathering. Students should do the vocabulary terms for this chapter. Wednesday we will discuss chemical and mechanical weathering. There will be a short activity on chemical weathering. Thursday we will look at Chapter 8 Erosion and discuss terms.
