Objective- Chapter 1:
Assess the impact of geography on the settling and development of the Carolina economy.
Week 1
Thurs. (8-25)"Getting to know you" activity. Go over rules and expectations as well as supplies.
Week 2
Tues. (8-30) Assign textbooks and go over how to use them.
Wed. (8-31) Begin Chapter 1. Study State Symbols for test Friday (545-546).
Thurs. (9-1) Look up terms on page 2 for the 1st chapter. Put in spiral notebook. Study for test Friday on State Symbols from pages 545-546. Finish terms for hw if not done in class.
Fri. - (9-2) Test on State Symbols. Scavenger hunt on how to use the book. Finish for hw if not done in class.
Week 3
Tues.- (9-6) - Go over N.C.'s location in the U.S. Cover p.2-5. Do map work on these pages. Also mapwork and questions on N.C. counties using Appendix IV. Should finish in class but if not, at home.
Wed.-(9-7) - Begin going over the Tidewater region of N.C. including: towns, land forms, rivers, ocean, currents, barrier islands, sounds, swamps, lakes (natural and manmade), universities, tourist attractions, economy, etc. No hw.
Thurs.-(9-8) - Finish up Tidewater information. No hw.
Fri. (9-9) - Go over Coastal Plain including: towns, rivers, crossroads hamlets, Sandhills, economy, Tobacco towns, Carolina Bays, etc. No hw.
Week 4
Mon. -(9-12) - Begin going over the Piedmont region including economy and its changes , natural resources, how the railroad affected where the towns and factories began, etc. No hw.
Tues. (9-13) - finish Piedmont region. Go over the legend of the devil's tramping grounds. No hw.
Wed. (9-14) - Give each student a N.C. legend to read. Have them each present their legend to the class. No hw.
Thurs. (9-15) - Finish telling the legends. If time permits, begin going over the Mountain region. No hw.
Fri. (9-16) - Go over the Mountain region including land forms, economy, river flow, etc. No hw.
Week 5
Mon. (9-19) - Watch video of the Biltmore Estate with follow-up questions. No hw.
Tues. (9-20) - Brainstorm about the four region - Tidewater, Coastal Plain, Piedmont, and Mountains. Make lists on the board.
Wed. (9-21) - Divide into 4 groups and begin selecting photos from Our State Magazine for each region to make a collage for each region.
Thurs.(9-22) - Continue with collages and end with finished products.
Fri.(9-23) - Each group will present their collage to the class. Grades will involve both the content of the collage and the presentation.
Week 6
Mon. (9-26) - Map work of N.C. including latitude, longitude, compass rose, and scale. They will label the regions, bordering states, capes, bays, and sounds. Also make a key(or legend) and color according to directions. HW if not completed.
Tues. (9-27) - Map work labeling the main rivers in N. C. as well as other other waterways. They will also answer some questions about what is in each region as well as some region map labeling. Do a review of the vocabulary of chpt. 1.Finish for hw if not completed in class.
Wed. (9-28) - Finish the chapter discussing N. C.'s weather and climate. Let students share stories of weather conditions they have witnessed (hurricanes, tornadoes, water spouts, thunderstorms).Progress reports go out.
Thurs. (9-29) - Review for Chapter 1 test. hw- STUDY FOR BIG TEST ON CHAPTER 1!
Fri. (9-30) - Chapter 1 test. Then do terms on page 44 for chapter 2 on Native Americans and explorers from Spain and France.
Objectives for Chapter 2:
1. Identify and describe American Indians who inhabited the regions that became Carolina and assess their impact on the colony.
Week 7
Mon. (10-3) - Introduce the chapter, "Natives and Newcomers", and explain the meaning. Go over the terms for the chapter assigned last Friday. Talk about Indian heritage. Go over the "Signs of the Times" and the chapter timeline from 10,000 B.C. to 1600 A.D. No homework.
Tues. (10-4) - Discuss how natives came from Asia over the land bridge at the Bering Sea during the last Ice Age and how they have been in N.C. for over 10,000 years. Go over the cultures and fill in the chart on the workbook page 9 as we discuss them. Then they will answer the questions at the bottom of the page and turn it in. Finish for hw if not completed in class.
Wed. (10-5) - Watch the video on the Town Creek Indian Mounds. Then I will let each row act out a scenerio from the video. No homework.
Objectives 2 and 3:
Compare and contrast the relative importance of differing ecomic, geographic, religious, and political motives for European exploration. Evaluate the impact of the Columbian Exchange on the cultures of American Indians, Europeans, and Africans.
Thurs. (10-6) - Begin going over Indian Life at the time of contact with Europeans. Go over the different tribes and language families. Discuss Indian habits and beliefs as well as village life. No hw.
Fri. (10-7) - Go over what a matrilineal society is, beliefs about nature, legends, and the Columbian Exchange. No homework.
Week (10-10 through 10-14)
Mon. (10-10) - Watch video about the Cherokees.
Tues. (10-11) - Finish video. Read some primary source writings of people on or involved with the Trail of Tears. Answer some questions. Write a letter home to family as if you were a soldier taking the Cherokee on the 1000 mile trip to Oklahoma. Include your job assignments, conditions on the trip, and some events that happened along the way. Finish for homework if not completed in class.
Wed. (10-12) - Go over belief systems and the Colombian exchange. Read a Cherokee article about their idea of creation and answer some questions. Finish for homework.
Thurs. (10-13) - Discuss Sequoyah who invented the Cherokee alphabet. Then have students figure out how to write their names in the Cherokee language. Make a poster for each class to sign.
Fri. (10-14) - Begin French and Spanish explorers. No homework.
Week (10-17 through 10-21)
Mon. (10-17) - Discuss how Spaniards found cocoa beans in Mexico and took them back to Europe and the evolution into the chocolate we eat today. Watch a video from the Hershey co. telling all of the processes in making chocolate. No hw.
Tues. (10-18) - Students will be assigned to a group and will invent a product made of chocolate that is not currently made of chocolate. They must make an advertisement, have a catchy slogan, have a target market, how they are going to advertise it in the media, tell why consumers need their product, and what makes their product different from other products. They will be presenting these ads to the rest of the class. No hw.
Wed. (10-19) - We will be covering French and Spanish explorers and their impact on North Carolina. This will lead into why the English wanted to start colonizing. Pages 72-75 in textbook. No hw.
Thurs. (10-20) - We will begin watching the 1st Roanoke voyage and discussing it in class. They will be filling out main characters and important answers as we watch it. No hw.
Fri. (10-21) - Finish the 1st Roanoke voyage and discuss, making sure answers are correct. Go over how Queen Elizabeth I became queen and why the English are interested in colonization. No hw.
Week (10-24 thru 10-28)
Mon. - (10-24) - We will begin watching the 2nd Roanoke Voyage and 1st colony and discussing it in class. They will be filling out important answers as we go. No hw.
Tues. - (10-25) - My classes will be in the computer lab all day doing Teen Biz.
Wed. (10-26) - We will finish the 2nd voyage and go over all of the answers.
Thurs. (10-27) - We will begin the 3rd Roanoke Voyage and 2nd colony following the same procedures as in the other 2.
Fri. (10-28) - We will finish the 3rd voyage and go over the answers. They need to study for a test on the videos which will be Monday on the early release day. 6th period did not have class today so they will have their test on Tues.
Week (10-31 thru 11-4)
Mon. (10-31) Half day. All classes except 6th will have test on Roanoke Voyages. Happy Halloween!
Tues. (11-1) - Finish up chapter 2. 6th will have test. Study for test on chpt. 2.
Wed. (11-2) - Teen Biz in computer lab.
Thurs. (11-3) - Test review for chpt. 2. Study for test on chpt. 2.
Fri. (11-4) - Test on Chpt. 2. Do terms for chpt. 3. Finish for homework if not completed in class.
Week of 7-10
Mon. (11-7) - Teen Biz in lab.
Objectives for Chapter 3
Compare and contrast the relative importance of differing economic, geographic, religious, and political European exploration.
Describe the factors that led to the founding and settlement of the American colonies including religious persecution, economic opportunity, adventure, and forced migration.
Identify geographic and political reasons for the creation of a distinct N.C. colony and evaluate the effects on the government and economics of the colony.
Describe the roles and contributions of diverse groups, such as the American Indians, European immigrants, landed gentry, tradesmen, and small farmers to everyday life in colonial N.C., and compare them to the other colonies.
Tues.(11-8) - Check vocabulary assigned Friday and go over it in class. Introduce Chapter 3, The Proprietors and their Problems. Go over "The Signs of the Times" and discuss.
Wed. (11-9) - Watch a short video on Jamestown so they can know why our 1st settlers moved to the Albemarle Sound area. Go over the 1st settlements on the Albemarle Sound and how they moved there looking for land to grow tobacco.
Thurs. (11-10) - Go over the chartering of Carolina and the social and economic conditions there.
Week of 11-14 thru 18
Mon. (11-14) - Teen Biz in computer lab for every class.
Tues. (11-15) - Go over King Charles II being restored to the crown of England and his subsequent giving of Carolina to the 8 Lords Proprietors who helped put him on the throne. Describe how many of the first settlers did not want to enforce the Navigation Acts so they cheated the crown out of taxes or customs duties. Also describe and discuss the Great Dismal Swamp.
Wed. (11-16) - I will do a lesson on Quakers, as they were some of N.C.'s first settlers. Religious persecution in Europe was one of the many reasons for immigration to the colonies.
Thurs. (11-17) - Go over Culpeper's Rebellion and how that affected North Carolina as well as Great Britain. They will begin filling out a sheet in class about rebellions and war.
Fri. - (11-18) - As we discuss the Cary's Rebellion over religion and Quakers' involvements and the Tuscarora War, they will finish filling out the sheet with Who? What? When? Where? and Why? answers.
Week of Nov. 21-23
Mon. (11-21) - Teen Biz in the computer lab for all classes.
Tues. (11-22) - Watch a video on the history of Thanksgiving.
Wed. (11-23) - Based on the book, Spirit Bear, that we have all read to our homerooms and had a Paideia seminar on, students will make their own totems.
