Principal, Becky Misner

Mr. Charles Burgess, Beaufort town manager, was present to speak to the Advisory Board about the Campen Road Highway 70 crossing. Thanks to Dail Bridges for arranging this meeting. In the last several weeks, the BMS Resource Officer has been at the Campen Road crossing after school. Not that many students cross there, but even if there is just one child crossing, we need to keep him/her safe. Officers are needed to keep students from crossing locations other than the light at Campen Road and Highway 70.  Mr. Burgess said that the Town has discussed moving the crossing equipment from the old Beaufort Elementary School to the Campen Road and Highway 70 intersection, and the equipment could be relocated. A sidewalk is needed on the east side of Highway 70 for the students to reach once they cross. In the next year the corner with the car lot and Dr. Short will be developed. That lot will have sidewalks.  The issue we have is that there is nothing on the southwest corner but a culvert, so students have to cross Campen and then cross Highway 70. Once the crossing equipment from the old Beaufort Elementary School crossing is installed and operating, there will be a crossing button for students to push.

More development is planned also. Professional Park drive will be connected to Campen, and residents may choose to exit via Campen Road, which will cause more traffic. We suggested that the developers could be asked to help with safe crossing sidewalks and equipment. Ms. Misner will meet soon with Charles Burgess and the developer to see what the situation will be.

The Grade 8th celebration will be at Freedom Park at 11:30. Practice in the morning.

Teacher Appreciation is the week of May 3rd. There will be a science field trip this week for Ms. Davis’s classes.  Progress reports go home on May 5th. 6th grade field trip is May 7th. $15 for kids $12 for parents. EOG Science 8th grade May 11th.  EOG’s May 18-20th.

Proctor help is needed and training is available. Please contact Ms. Debbie Butcher or Ms. Ashley Hardison if interested.

Jim Brett was unable to be present due to illness

This was our first meeting paperless. Board members will go over the minutes for the previous meeting on the school website prior to each meeting.

Minutes from February 22, 2010 meeting were approved.

Ms Misner advised the board that Officer LeMay has been moved to direct traffic at Carraway Dr and Hwy 101 both in the morning and afternoon. Mr. Carl is at the school in the morning and has been moved to the corner of Campen Road / Highway 70 in the afternoon to assist the children walking/biking that way and that she has addressed safety with the children who use that route.

Both school board candidates are running in District #1. Both gave the advisory board a short introduction to themselves and what they see as the most important issues.

There was no Chorus Concert in March. It is now scheduled for April 1st at 7PM.

There will be some changes to next years scheduling, the changes include Envirothon will be going to a club instead of a class and Battle of the Books will only be in the 2nd and 3rd 9 weeks.

Envirothan is going to the State Competition.

The eight period day was explained to the school board candidates.

Ms Misner went over the calendar of upcoming events, all of which can be found on the BMS website, which is updated regularly with any changes.

The next advisory board meeting is scheduled for Monday April 26.

February 22, 2010

The Parent Advisory Board met on Monday, February 22, 2010. Members present included Ms. Misner, Melanie Duncan, Kyle Willis, JoAnn Maulshagen, Christina Golden, Dail Bridges , and Vicky Thayer.

Approved minutes from last meeting.

Decided that Ms. Misner will not print out individual copies of the previous meeting’s  minutes for each meeting, but Parent Advisory Council members should read them online prior to the meeting and come prepared with changes or discussion items. Ms. Misner will have one printed copy of previous meeting’s minutes at the next meeting.

Old business

bullet

6th graders did not go to MacDaddy’s, but 7th and 8th graders did (Honor roll students).

bullet

We are still awaiting state approval for the crosswalk at Campen and Highway 70.Dail Bridges will contact Chief Lewis and the Superintendent of Schools to investigate the status and hopefully see what can be done next to facilitate the process. Dail will have a report back at next meeting.

bullet

Our  SRO officer is doing a good job directing traffic at Highway 101 in the mornings and afternoons. In her place, we have an officer greeting the students and encouraging drivers to pull as far forward as possible in the drop off lane before letting children out.  This eases traffic congestion considerably.  Ms. Misner will investigate with Maintenance what can be done to make the traffic loop tighter so we can pull in the loop without going into the parking lot.

bullet

We really need a turning lane on Carraway Road . Ms. Misner will look into some correction, but it is likely too big an issue to be corrected easily.

What is happening at our school!

bullet

There was a wonderful spelling bee on the 12th. The audience was perfectly silent while students were spelling and students did  great job. Congratulations Kyra!

bullet

Friday, February 19 was a big day: The wrestling tournament and dance were held then, and  Engineers from Cherry Point did a demonstration for physics students. There was a mock battle of the books competition with Atlantic and both teams worked very hard. Wrestlers came in 2nd with John Duncan and PJ Brady coming in first place. Congratulations wrestlers!

bullet

The girls’ basketball team played a tough game and lost to Pamlico. The boys won against Pamilico and are undefeated. Congratulations to both teams!

Upcoming Events!

bullet

Tomorrow (2/23) is Paideia Day when students will learn about and discuss tolerance. Teachers are all involved in teaching this.

bullet

Progress reports go home on Wednesday, February 24th.

bullet

On Saturday, February 27th the 7th grade students will be integrally involved in “Raising the Story of Menhaden Fishing” at the Core Sound Waterfowl Museum and Heritage Center on Harkers Island .  The story of Menhaden fishing and what it has meant to our economy and culture is being “raised” through oral histories and other projects and celebrated at this day-long gathering.  Ms. Boyette has led the 7th graders in working on a video oral history project with some of the Menhaden fishermen that will be unveiled at this event. The students will be “staffing” various sections of the exhibits for much of the day, and will be invited to sing the final song with the Menhaden Chanteymen, who are performing at 3:00. Some of the menhaden fishermen are getting old, many have died, and soon we will lose this piece of culture as menhaden fishing in NC is dying out—the purpose of this project is to preserve this part of our culture.

bullet

Teachers have a work day on the 15th of March; no school.

bullet

Chorus concert on March 25th.

bullet

Battle of the Books competition is on March 12th beginning at 9:00 at West Carteret High School . All families are invited to attend. The team will be traveling by activity bus.

bullet

Feedback for Middle School Express- make expectations clearer re: tests, etc.

bullet

March 8th leadership team will meet, so Ms. Misner would like feedback about student schedules and choices. How should parents let Ms. Misner know feedback? Email Ms. Misner with feedback—from yourself or other parents.  All feedback welcome.

bullet

Twenty microscopes donated to BMS from Dr. William Kirby-Smith at Duke Marine Laboratory. (Thanks to Annie Burbridge for the idea and Vicky Thayer for making this request and getting this donation!) Karen Davis, the science teacher whose class received the microscopes, has been out. Upon her return, Ms. Misner will work with her to organize thank-yous from the students. The parent advisory committee will not send a thank you since this will be coming from the class.

bullet

The February 19 Dance raised $400 for Haiti relief. There was $320 previously + the office collection container from games, etc. has given us an approximate total of $800. This will be used to purchase school supplies for an orphanage in Haiti . We will order school supplies from Wal-Mart, and they will be sent to a contact person who will personally take them to orphanage. Ms Misner said this will all happen through a local church that supports an orphanage there. Thanks to Sara Davenport for getting the food organized for the dance.  The DJ was great with the kids and all seemed to have an enjoyable time.

bullet

Dail Bridges forgot to mention at the meeting (and Vicky graciously agreed to include in these minutes) the wonderful poetry reading on Saturday evening, February 20, at BMS, that Ms.Boyette and her 7th grade students hosted. 19 students had signed up to read from their original poetry collections, and about 13 or so students were in attendance, along with family members.  Each student read several of poems that they had written that demonstrated the different types and styles of poetry that they had learned about.

Next Parent Advisory meeting will be March 29th.

Reviewed Minutes-

We reviewed minutes from January 4th meeting, and briefly discussed the Lifeguard program.  This year the 7th and 8th grade students will participate in the Lifeguard curriculum but starting during the 2010-2011 academic year, only 7th grade students will take the course.  This course covers topics such as Domestic Violence, Safe Dates, and choices.  If parents wish to see the curriculum, they can contact Debbie Butcher, the school counselor.

Ms. Misner and others are mentoring students while our Safety Resource Officer, Maggie Lemay, supervises students in the cafeteria during lunch.

We discussed the proposed crosswalk at the intersection of Campen Road and Highway 70, and learned that we are still waiting for state approval.

bullet

BMS Boys and Girls Basketball teams will host Broad Creek Middle School on Tuesday, January 26th. On Wednesday, January 27th, the wrestling team will host Pamlico Middle School . Teachers have a workday on February 15th. The Wrestling Tournament is on Friday, February 19th.  Progress reports go home on February 24th.

bullet

Ms. Midgett is presently teaching 7th grade Social Studies.

Budget-

Last year, BMS received $6000 in textbook money. Most of this money was spent on workbooks (ex: math). This coming year, there will be no textbook money. There will be no staff development funds. There will be no remediation funds for students who do not pass. Students who pass the EOG’s on the first round will work, on team, to complete specific projects while remediation is taking place. Parents may be called on to volunteer in classrooms at this time.

BMS is requesting lighting for the western gymnasium door area. It was hoped that BMS would get a canopy in front so students would not have to get wet on rainy days while waiting to be picked up by parents, but it doesn’t appear likely that we will receive funds.

We are requesting fencing to fence in the back of the school between the 7th and 8th grade wings, and security cameras for some of the blind spots around the school.  Also, Ms. Misner has requested the intellekey lock system. This system would eliminate the need for school-wide replacement locks each time a school key is lost.

New outdoor bleachers for seating during athletic events have been requested, because the old wooden ones are creating splinters!

Please contact any parent advisory board member if you have questions or comments you would like us to answer or discuss. Thank you.

Review Minutes-

We reviewed minutes from November meeting, and clarified two points.  The first point was that students from grades 6, 7 and 8 are allowed to participate in Quiz Bowl and Battle of the Books, and can participate in both activities.

The second clarification was about Facilities.  BMS administrators requested furniture for one classroom per grade level, as has been done in previous years.

Old Business-

We discussed the status of the crosswalk at Highway 70 East and Campen Road.  Dorrie Nicholson will bring up the matter at the Board of Education meeting on January 5, 2010 and will report back to Ms. Misner and the members of the Parent Advisory group at the next meeting.

Parent Advisory Members raised $80 to give the brave, professional, freezing Officer Knox a Holiday bonus

Calendar-

Wrestling match on Wednesday, Jan 6th at 4 pm.  The first nine weeks ends on January 15th and there are two teacher workdays on 1/16 and 1/17 so the next nine week period begins on January 18th.   Report cards go out on January 22nd and the Awards Ceremony is tentatively scheduled for the same day.

The next Parent Advisory meeting will be February 1, 2010 at 5:30 pm. Mrs. Misner moved the advisory meeting to January 25th because of the BOE budget meeting.

Seventh and eighth graders will participate in a Safe-Date- Lifeguard program.  Students will be separated by gender so students from each group will feel more comfortable asking questions.  Parents will receive information about this program before it begins- the information will come home with students.

There is a questionnaire on the website which all parents and guardians and significant others should complete.

Students will be seeing a SAS-developed chart overlay that compares each student’s grades with other students across the county and state.  This is a visual so they can see these during focus groups; and students will be asked if they are happy with where they place compared to other students.  A parent asked if she could see this info and Ms. Misner said parents could follow- up with her to see this info if they wish.

Seventh graders have participated in an enrichment program that combined ELA and Science.  Chanty singers, storytellers, and menhaden boat workers gave a workshop.  There have been more scheduled activities that will take place later in the year with this.

The National Park Service has teamed up with Web Keepers (Janet McLendon's) class at BMS and students are helping the NPS with their website, as the NPS helps with the science curriculum.  The NPS and BMS websites will link to each other.

The 8th grade drama class will work with BES in the upcoming week.  The 7th grade drama class will be perform for the student body on the 15th should they be ready.

If parents have questions, concerns, or corrections for the BMS website, they should contact Janet McLendon at janet.mclendon@carteretk12.org

Teachers are still discussing the eighth grade awards ceremony.

BMS will have a new Resource Officer, Maggie LeMay, by the 10th of January.  Resource officers serve as mentors, drug awareness educators, and support students in making good community choices. One of Ms. Misner’s priorities is to have the RO interact regularly and frequently with the students and have positive interactions with the students. BMS pays the RO’s salary.

The meeting ended with all advisory board members taking the online parent survey. Ms Misner welcomes emails or requests for information that she could bring to the meeting. If parents have questions or ideas that would be good for the parent advisory board to hear about, contact Ms. Misner. Parents can also contact any parent advisory board member if they have questions or concerns about the school.

Old Business:

We discussed the crosswalk at Highway 70 East and Campen Road .  Two members of the Board of Education have written letters to the Dept of Transportation  requesting a pedestrian signaling device.  The Carteret County library is now on the east side of Highway 70 across from Campen Road , which increases the need for a signaling device.

Ms. Misner opened the meeting with introductions and welcomed all in attendance.  We reviewed upcoming events on the calendar.

The first football game played at BMS begins at 5 pm on Wednesday, September 16th.

On Monday, September 28th is an Open House that begins at 6pm  Students will lead parents to all eight periods of their classes.  Parents and students will have five minutes in each class and three minutes between classes.

Wednesday, September 20th will be an early release day.

Monday, October 5th will be the next Parent Advisory Group meeting and meetings will be the first Monday of every month thereafter.

We discussed focus groups.  Ms. Misner explained that the groups meet at lunch time.  They sit at assigned seats and spend half (26 minutes) of their lunch period to eat lunch and the other half spent in focus groups.  Four teachers (Media, Guidance, Safety Resource Officer, and Core Teacher) each work with a group of ten students in a special activity.

We nominated Dorrie Nicholson as the school board representative, Andrea Johnson (?) as President, and Vicky Thayer as Secretary.

We discussed bullying and examination of current policies to determine if everything possible is being done to eliminate bullying.

We also discussed the End of Year Award Ceremony and making changes to the number of students winning awards.  A possibility would be instead of one or two students winning multiple academic awards from each grade level, distributing the awards among several students and recognizing students for accomplishments other than high grade averages.

Parents are welcome to contact any advisory board member about concerns.  Advisory board member names and contact information will be posted on the website.
