History
In 1999, it started out as a simple 6th grade Pen Pal project between
Beaufort Middle School social studies/geography teachers Lessie Guthrie
and Peta Godfrey from Rastrick High School in Brighouse, England. 2002 - Ms. Godfrey traveled to the Beaufort to meet the staff at BMS. She wanted to learn about our school system's discipline plans. She visited and met with administrators from ECHS, BMS and Central Office. 2003 - Rastrick High School students traveled to Beaufort Middle School to finally to meet their ePals face to face. They lived and went to school with our students. Some of the high school students experienced their first formal prom at ECHS. Our middle school UK students learned to cheer and had their wish to ride a yellow school bus come true. We took them to many Carteret County sites such as the Maritime Museum, Historic Grounds, Core Sound Waterfowl Museum, Atlantic Beach, and Fort Macon. 2004 - BMS students traveled to the UK to visit Rastrick High School to see how their ePals live at home and at school. While we were in the UK, we took an overnight trip to London and visited many of the historic sites in London which included Buckingham Palace, London Bridge, Westminster Cathedral, House of Commons, Big Ben, and Westminster Abbey and an arranged tour of Parliament. 2006 - Rastrick High School students traveled to Beaufort Middle School. Again, the UK students stayed with host families. We took them on an overnight trip to Harker’s Island, Cape Lookout, Ocracoke and Swan Quarter. They experienced their first Pig Picking and first North Carolina ferry ride. But they learned that kids are kids and they are more alike than different. What a cultural exchange!2008 - On June 10th, sixteen students from Beaufort Middle and East Carteret visited Rastrick High School. Again students experienced the life of a typical UK student by living with that student for ten days. Each of our students joined their host students in everyday activities, such as going to school, shopping, typical family activities and meals. While there, both the UK host students and our students took a bus trip to Edinburgh where we saw the countryside, visited the Edinburgh Castle and other historical sites. On the way back we stopped at Whitley Bay to compare our coastline to theirs. Students visited other parts of the UK during the weekend with their host families. Some went to York and visited the Viking Museum, dungeons, the Roman walls and a cathedral dating back to the 600s BC.
