Tomb of the Unknown Soldier
What you need
to know before you go
The fifth grade class will be going to Washington D.C. soon.
We will visit many interesting places in the capital city of the United
States. One of these places is the
Unknown Soldier. The
tomb of the Unknown
Solder is located in Arlington Cemetery in Arlington, Virginia, near
Washington D.C.. It is the Tomb of America’s Unknown Soldiers
from World War I, World War II, and the Korean War. This Tomb is visited
by Americans and many from other countries each day.
The Congress on March 4, 1921, approved a resolution providing for
the burial in Arlington National Cemetery of an Unknown and unidentified
American soldier of WWI. Many American soldiers who fought in WWI in
France were buried in France. Many of these soldiers could not be
identified. Four American soldiers were picked from cemeteries in France,
but only one was picked to send to Arlington. Later an Unknown soldier from
WWII and the Korean War were picked.
This tomb is guarded by special soldiers chosen for this job from
all branches of the military service. They march for one hour and then
they have the changing of the guards. It is a very impressive
ceremony so I hope we get to see. You must be quiet at the tomb
during the changing of the guard so you can hear the commands and honor
the dead soldiers. The Tomb of the Unknown Soldier is an important part of our history. There are thousands of unknown soldiers buried in Arlington Cemetery which is a Military honor; however, the tomb of the Unknown soldier is probably the most famous.
I learned that the guards change every hour. And they stand guard 24 hours a day. And 360 days a year.
