What you need to now before you go! Photos What I learned!

What you need to know before you go
through the tour of George Washington's house at Mt. Vernon.

Did you know that Mount Vernon was the home to our first president?  Mount Vernon only had four rooms when George Washington our first president first moved in.  Mount Vernon was named after Edward Vernon.  Mount Vernon is now owned by the Mount Vernon Ladies' Association.

When George Washington lived in Mount Vernon it only had four rooms.  George Washington enlarged Mount Vernon over the years.  Mount Vernon's frame is constructed of sheathing that is beveled.  It is also covered with a mixture of paint and sand to give the appearance of stone.

Mount Vernon was sold in 1858 for $200,000.  Mount Vernon was bought by the Mount Vernon Ladies' Association,  which it was established in 1853 by Ann Cunningham.  They bought Mount Vernon from the great grandson of George Washington's brother.

Mount Vernon was named after a British Admiral Edward Vernon.  Lawrence Washington served with admiral Vernon.  Lawrence was George Washington's brother.

George Washington lived in Mount Vernon for 45 years.  George Washington inherited Mount Vernon from his sister-in-law.  Thomas Jefferson and James Madison visited George Washington at Mount Vernon.  Mount Vernon is a great place.  I hope you'll like it.
