What you need to know before you go! Photos What I learned!

What you need to know before you go
to the Lincoln Memorial.

If I told you one man was responsible for saving the Union, would you believe it?  If not ,there's a memorial built to honor him in Washington D.C. his name is Abraham Lincoln. He was the sixteenth President of the United States. He is the President who gave the slaves the freedom.

The Lincoln Memorial was built between 1914 and 1922.  It was carved from 28 blocks of white Georgia marble. It has 36 columns, one for each state in the Union at the time of Lincoln's death. The chamber inside the memorial has a statue of Lincoln sitting in a chair. This statue is 19 feet high and weighs 173 tons.

The theme of the memorial is about the Union.  Abraham Lincoln felt strongly that the states should stay together as a group.  Some states left the Union when Lincoln was elected President.  This Confederacy and the Union fought in the Civil War.  The Union won!!  Lincoln went to Gettysburg, Virginia and made a speech to honor the Union soldiers who died in the war.  This is known as the Gettysburg Address.  It is inscribed on the south wall of the memorial across from a painting of the unity of North and South.

Another reason for the Civil War was slavery.  Lincoln thought that slavery should not spread and hoped that it would one day die out.  The Confederate States wanted to keep slavery because they needed it.  During the war Lincoln gave an order known as the Emancipation Proclamation which freed slaves in states that were still fighting against the Union.  This helped the Union win the war and the states could try to work together again.  In the memorial there is a painting of the angel of truth freeing a slave.

The Lincoln Memorial was built to honor President Abraham Lincoln and the country he fought to save.  He believed that all people should have their freedom and he was able to fee some slaves.  If you are ever in Washington, D.C., remember to stop and see the Lincoln Memorial.
