On January 28, 1986, the Space Shuttle Challenger exploded just seconds after lift off with Beaufort Native, Michael J. Smith as pilot. 

On January 28, 2010 Beaufort Elementary School formally opened the Michael J. Smith Mini Museum to honor those seven astronauts that perished in the disaster.
