HOW TO BE SUCCESSFUL IN SCIENCE CLASS: A STUDENT HANDBOOK

 

As we grow, we take on new responsibilities. You, the student, should accept the responsibility to pass this course. I, the teacher, have accepted the responsibility of providing instruction to help each student achieve the objectives given by the state of North Carolina. You will be able to demonstrate your learning by class participation, assignments, laboratories, projects, reports, portfolio and tests.

 

I. Supplies (bring to class everyday)

a. if you lose a book another will be issued, must pay for a book before receiving a third

Paper – standard loose-leaf or notebook, daily notes will be checked periodically

2 pens – taking notes, classwork

Pencils – pencil sharpener use is limited, suggest using pen, bring a pencil sharpener

2 in.3-ring binder for saving all work – binder will be kept by student and used as a portfolio for parent and teacher to view

II. Rules for keeping our class enjoyable.

Student must raise hand to be recognized during class discussions.

a. this will allow us to listen and show respect for each student’s opinion

b. no food, gum, or drinks

Consequences for inappropriate behavior

a. see Emperor Fish behavior plan

Tardies

a. inside room and at seat ready to begin class

b. see Emperor Fish behavior plan

No marking of any kind, anywhere in classroom – this will be considered vandalism and will result in chill-out or TLC

Bathroom

a. opportunities to go before school, during breaks or at lunch

b. if emergency, must sign-out on sheet in front of room before leaving

c. if  becomes a problem, parents or administration contacted

May not leave room for phone calls except when sick or message from office asking you to call parent.( cell phones kept in locker)

Cheating

a. complete your own work, do not have someone’s work next to yours

b. plagiarism will be considered as cheating

c. student will receive a incomplete, parents contacted and school administration notified

Assignments

                                                  a. any missed assignments must be completed

                                                  b. all answers to questions will be in complete sentences

                                                  c. answer all questions so you will know the question

                                                  d. do not copy question word for word in answer

III. Grading Policy ( Check teacher's web page for up-dated assignments )

a. grade sheet may be sent home at anytime to be signed.  If you want teacher to figure grade, please allow a day to compare with student’s calculations. Check myegrades.com on school website.

b. any  test grade of a 75 or less can be retaken and average of both given

c. any other graded assignment can be redone

d. retakes can be given before or after school on a date agreeable with teacher

                    e. grades are based on average of test grades, projects, labs, journals, presentations and reports

                    f. no extra credit is given

Must have 70 average to pass course. PARENT SHOULD RECEIVE A PROGRESS REPORT OR REPORT CARD EVERY 4.5 WEEKS!

                              CREDIT WILL NOT BE GIVEN TO ANY PROJECT OR REPORT THAT HAS BEEN COPIED WORD FOR WORD"PLAGIARISM"

IV. Missed assignments and test

Student is responsible for finding out missed assignments "check assignment calendar"

If student misses more than 1 day a reasonable due date will be set.

If absent day before scheduled test may take test on regular test date or next day

Official absences kept by the office

Missed assignments and tests can be made-up before or after school

Science is the search for the explanation of things we observe in nature. As we search for these explanations, we will learn about our natural world and at the same time improve our minds.
