If student is interested in a topic for first nine weeks ( report, poster diagram, powerpoint or model) one may be completed, but not for extra credit. See teacher for approved topic. Topics include but not limited to: 1. Investigate 5 careers in science by creating a poster with pictures and information (job description, education, salary, etc.) 2. Read about a scientific experiment and identify the steps of the scientific method used. 3. Report on the deformed frogs found in Minnesota. 4. Develop a timeline of scientific discoveries during your lifetime. 5. Diagram of the three temperature scales, history of each and record high's and low's in different locations around the world. 6. Diagram and report on atmospheric layers. 7. Report on space shuttle's flight through the atmosphere. 8. Powerpoint on auroras 9. Report on heat island effects 10. Greenhouse effect 11. Global warming 12. Poster of global winds 13. Jet streams and the weather 14. Air pollution and its effects on the human body 15. Acid rain 16. Ice core samples of composition of air 17. Effects of hog waste in N.C. 18. History of Hurricanes in N.C.
Second Nine Weeks 1. Build a working weather station and record observations for 1 week 2. Power point presentation of different clouds 3. Science of lightning 4. Major snowstorms of N.C. 5. Tornadoes of N.C. 6. Weather map report- collect weather maps for a week and write a 2 page report (story) of the weather that has occurred 7. Present drought situation in N.C. and ways to conserve 8. Compare cities with same latitude but different climate 9. Monsoons 10. Ice Age theories 11. Water Biomes 12. 2-page report on weather folklore 13. Complete a climatagram for 10 cities around the world and identify the type of biome that each city is located in 14. Display how radar is used to determine speed 15. Report on findings about NASCAR. Speed of cars, tracks, g-force, inertia, safety, acceleration and horsepower 16. Speeds of different animals (ex. snail, whale, cheetah) include pictures 17. Discovery of Teflon 18. Biography of Sir Isaac Newton 19. Moon's effect on the earth's tides 20.
