Artists

Art History is a vital aspect of the program at BCMS.   The concepts and skills we learn in art class become much more real when introduced within the context of a specific person.  Rather than a generic list of artists, I will regularly update the site to list those names we have mentioned or are studying in class.  For instance, seventh and eighth graders recently completed cut paper constructions based on the paintings of Stuart Davis.  Considered one of the foremost American painters Davis, born in 1894,  began his career painting in a somewhat traditional fashion.  During the depression years he worked as a muralist for the Works Project Administration (WPA), a national program created to provide artists with meaningful employment which enhanced the quality of life.  During the 1950's Davis, a great lover of jazz music, illustrated many album covers and concert posters.  His work became increasing cubist and abstract; his bold and pure colors were perfectly suited to this purpose!  Davis continued to paint and teach until his death in 1964.

His work has had a profound influence on my own paintings.  I consider Davis to be among the most brilliant and inspiring artists of his time.

In coming weeks we will examine the paintings and drawings of Wayne Thiebaud.  His colorful and "delicious" paintings, often depicting cakes and pies, are a sure favorite with kids!
