NEWPORT If defense wins championships, then the Broad Creek Middle School girls basketball team has the inside track on this season’s top spot. The lady Bulldogs’ rabid defensive play Thursday in the middle school season opener at Newport Middle shut down the lady Eagles and helped Broad Creek take a commanding 45-8 victory.

The lady Bulldogs implemented a stifling, full-court press to open the game and did not let up in their half-court sets during the latter half of the contest. In the meantime, Broad Creek forced 46 Newport turnovers, which was twice as many as the lady Bulldogs committed.

The Newport turnovers severely limited the lady Eagle scoring chances, as Newport could only amass two points in the final three quarters, including a scoreless fourth.

Newport (0-1) is coming off an over .500 record last year where the lady Eagles finished third behind Morehead Middle and Broad Creek.

Unfortunately, much of last year’s team has moved on, as Newport returns just five players from that team. One of those, Ashley Walker, is injured and did not play Thursday.

Newport ’s inexperience showed, especially on offense, as only four lady Eagles made it into the scorebook.

While Newport is breaking in numerous fledgling Eagles, Broad Creek (1-0) a pack of eight lady Bulldogs returning from a team that went 9-3 on last season.

With the opening round of games out of the way, both teams have an even tougher challenge ahead, as Broad Creek and Newport face Morehead Middle in their next games.

Morehead was last season’s Crystal Coast Athletic Conference champions and swept Newport and Broad Creek.

Both teams will be looking for revenge, but Newport will get the first crack when the lady Eagles travel to Morehead City on Monday with a 4 tip-off. Then Broad Creek will have its first chance to claim conference supremacy Wednesday when the Minutemen make the trip to Morehead City for a 4 p.m. tip-off.

Wrestling

t’s a new year and a new team, but it’s the same old story for the machine that is Broad Creek wrestling, as the Bulldogs opened up the 2008 season with a thorough 71-15 victory over Newport/Morehead City on Wednesday.

Broad Creek captured the first four matches by pin and went on to gain wins in eight of the final 11 matches, all by pin, to take the decisive victory.

Gaining victories by wide margins is nothing new for Broad Creek wrestling as the Bulldogs have captured five consecutive conference titles, with the last three capping undefeated seasons.

Morehead City wrestling joined forces with Newport after the Minutemen were unable to find a coach for the season to replace D.A. Ballou.

Newport/Morehead City will take part in an open tournament at Beaufort Middle School on Saturday and will compete with Down East/Beaufort at Beaufort Middle School next Wednesday.

Broad Creek will travel to Pamlico to take on that team’s first-year wrestling program on Wednesday.
