Tryon Palace

 

 

Built:    1767-1770 by John Hawks.

Location:    New Bern, NC (NC's First Capital).

Purpose:    Served as a Governor's residence, meeting place for the colonial Assembly, and for the legislature.

Named After:    Governor William Tryon.

Structure:    Modest brick structure, Georgian-style house, 38 rooms, and 2 story.

1796:    Raleigh was named the new capital of NC.

1789:   The main house was destroyed by a fire.

1950's:   Tryon Palace was reconstructed.

Now:   Tryon Palace is now served as a historic site.  Many people visit New Bern to see Tryon Palace and New Bern's many historic homes.  Tryon Palace is surrounded by some very beautiful gardens.
