"The Old North State"

    On November 21, 1789 North Carolina became the twelfth of the thirteen states.  The state was named in honor of King Charles I and II and the name came from the Latin word Carolinus, which means "of Charles".  North Carolina is one of the leading producers in the tobacco industry and ever since the 1920's has also been a major source in manufactured goods.  It is divided into three regions known as the Piedmont, Coastal Plain, and the Mountain region.  Raleigh is the capital of North Carolina, and is one of the largest cities in the state, along with Charlotte, Greensboro, Durham, and Winston-Salem.
