We congratulate Mr. and Mrs. Theodore
Courman for the sports prowess of their sons, T.J. and
Andrew, both of whom played football at T.J Courman plays football for
Appalachian State, and last Saturday the Mountaineers
defeated the fifth-ranked Michigan Wolverines 34-32 in
the T.J., wrote Mr. Smith, “was a key
figure in the 34-32 win that has turned the college
football world upside down, catching a 20-yard pass at
the Running a down and out pattern five yards beyond the line of scrimmage, Mr. Courman instead decided to cut up field, and in doing so gained 15 crucial yards. The Mountaineers kicked a field goal and then held off the Wolverines by blocking a field goal. “With the win, Appalachian State becomes the first team from the Football Championship Subdivision (formerly I-AA) to defeat a ranked Football Bowl Subdivision (formerly I-A) team,” said Mr. Smith. Tomorrow, as Appalachian State plays Lenoir-Rhyne, the Courman brothers go head-to-head against one another because younger brother Andrew plays for Lenoir-Rhyne. The Courmans have a large contingent going to watch the game. Said their father: “I just want both of them to play well. I don’t think they have ever competed against each other so it should be interesting. I’m going to stay neutral.” Vince Lombardi, the late great coach of the Greenbay Packers, would have loved it. |
