A North Carolina public school earns the designation of North Carolina School of Distinction whenever 80% or more of its students are judged to be at or above grade level in grades 3-8. Students are judged to be at or above grade level when they score Level III or Level IV on the Mathematics, Reading and Writing tests administered at the end of the year in May. Students scoring at Level III are judged to be on grade level and students scoring at Level IV are above grade level.

North Carolina School of Excellence

1999-2000 2001-2002 2002-2003 2003-2004

In order for a school to earn the designation of "North Carolina School of Excellence" two criteria must be met. A school has to meet or exceed the growth goals set by the State Board of Education and the school must have at least 90% of its students in grades three (3) through eight (8) proficient in Reading, Mathematics and Writing.

In reference to the first criteria Atlantic Elementary School exceeded its student growth goals by more than 10% and thus earned the status of an Exemplary School. In reference to the second criteria Atlantic Elementary School has 92.3% of its students in grades 3-8 proficient in Reading, Mathematics and Writing

During the first three years of the State's ABC School Improvement Plan, Atlantic Elementary School earned the honor of being designated a North Carolina School of Distinction.
