Information about the Washington
Monument
The Washington
Monument is a white obelisk located in the National Mall in Washington, D.C.
The Monument is a memorial to President George Washington, the "Father of
Our Country". This monument is built with granite, sandstone, and marble,
of which was designed by Robert Mills.
Development for the memorial was started on the 100th
anniversary of George Washington’s birthday, 1833. A large group of citizens formed the Washington
National Monument Society to collect money for the monument.
Construction was
started in 1848, was interrupted by the Civil War, and was finished about
thirty years later, in 1884. There is a difference in the marble on the
monument because of having to retrieve the stone deeper from the same quarry.
This is visible about two-thirds the way up.
On October 9,
1888, it was opened to the public. At 169 meters (555 feet 5 1/8 inches), it
was the tallest structure in the world until the Eiffel Tower--located in
Paris France--was completed. Other monuments with the same name are located in Annapolis,
Maryland and Baltimore, Maryland.
There is a law in
Washington, D.C. that states no other building in the capital can stand taller
than the Washington Monument.
In front of the
Washington Monument is the Reflecting Pool, a body of water eastward from the
Lincoln Memorial.
The four faces on
the pyramidal point at the top bear inscriptions, which tell of the dates that
the stones were laid on.
The
Washington Monument is a memorial, a historical remembrance, and a pride to
the United States of America.
