Information about the Vietnam Veterans Memorial

The Vietnam Memorial is located in Washington D.C.  This memorial honors the U.S. Armed Forces that served in the Vietnam War.  This memorial consists of three different parts,  The Three Soldiers statue, the Vietnam Women’s Memorial, and the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Wall.
The Three Soldiers statue was designed to complement the Vietnam Veterans Memorial.  This statue was unveiled in 1984, this statue was designed by Fredrick Hart.  Fredrick placed third in the original competition.
The Women’s Memorial is located south of the Vietnam Wall.  It was designed by Glenna Goodacre and was dedicated on November 11, 1993.
The Vietnam Veteran’s Wall has two black granite walls that are 246 feet and 9 inches long. This wall was designed by Maya Ying Lin.  At the highest point of the walls they are 10.1 feet high.  The granite used for the wall came from Bangalore, India, this granite was chosen because of its reflective quality.  They wanted the wall to be reflective so that when visitors look up at a name they can see themselves;  bringing back memories.  One of the walls points towards the Lincoln Memorial, and the other towards the Washington Monument.  Each one of the walls have seventy-two panels, seventy listing names, and two small blank panels at each extremity.  Along the base of the wall there is a pathway where visitors can walk, read all of the names, and pray. People can also make a pencil rubbing of a name.
The names on the wall are in chronological order.   There are 58,249 names on the wall, eight of them which are women.  Approximately 1,200 of these are MIA’s, and POW’s, these are denoted with a cross, and the ones that have been confirmed dead are marked with a diamond.  If they have been missing and turn up alive the cross is circumscribed by a circle.  This has never occurred. When their death is confirmed a diamond is superimposed over the cross.  The font used on the wall is Optime.
