Fact or Fiction
Information about the Air and Space Museum The National Air and Space Museum was formed on August12, 1964. It was originally called the National Air Museum. The beginning of the conquest of space in the 1950s and 1960s helped to drive the renaming of the Museum to the National Air and Space Museum. The museum has
collections that date back to 1876 when the Smithsonian received a group of
kites from the Chinese Imperial Commission.
The collection of the Museum was housed in the Arts and Industries
Building, in a shed in the south yard known as the “Air and Space
Building” and outdoors in “Rocket Row” before the new museum was built
in 1976. In 1889, the Stringfellow engine became the first object
added into the collection. The
museum's total collection numbers over 30,000 aviation-related and 9,000
space-related artifacts. In addition, the museum has an annex, the Steven F. Udvar-Hazy Center. It opened on December 15, 2003 and now has 200 aircraft and 135 spacecraft on display. Steven F. Udvar-Hazy made the Center possible by a $ 65 million gift in 1999 to the Smithsonian Institution. A
special feature of the Center is the National Aviation and Space Exploration
Wall of Honor. Located along the entryway to the Center, the Wall of
Honor is a memorial to the thousands of people who have contributed to our
aviation and space exploration heritage. Names of honorees are inscribed on
the wall, which will continue to grow in the years to come. In
2001, the National Air and Space Museum celebrated its 25th anniversary.
In June 2004, the Udvar-Hazy Center welcomed its one-millionth
visitor, and in December of that same year, the Center celebrated its first
anniversary. Answers
