Information about Mount Vernon

The land for which Mount Vernon was built was purchased in 1674 by John Washington they had great dreams of a large plantation. He had no idea that one day it would one of the most well none houses and plantation in the world.  In 1743, the house which John Washington had built was being redone by Gorge Washington half-brother Lawrence Washington with the help of a man named Epsewasson the plantation would later be named after his last name Vernon.  In 1752 Lawrence Washington died leaving the property to George and there haft sister Anne.  When Anne died in 1761 the property was to be left to the next owner George Washington. After Washington death in 1799 the plantation went through a series of descendents who didn’t have the time or the money to maintain the property.
Washington spent most of his time after the war repairing the land and the buildings on the land. It is said that one of Washington’s most loved things to do was to go out on the land and make little repairs.  It was these little repairs that makes Mount Vernon one of the most famous houses in the U.S.
Mount Vernon has less land than when it was first purchased because after George Washington died. Some of the land was sold off when other people owned it after him but no one lived there long. Now the state owns some of the original land but there still is a lot of land on Mount Vernon.
There is also a more modern side of Mount Vernon.  There is a food court and an inside restaurant for relaxing after a hard day walking around looking at history.  It is important to keep your mindset that this is where one of the most important person in American history lived some of his life. Without this person and his great house, history would not be the same. One of the reasons that they picked the beautiful spot for Mount Vernon   is it overlooks the Potomac river which runs very close to D.C.  There is also a beautiful piece of land running all around the house and right next to the river. The spot was also perfect because the main way of sending and getting thing was by boat and with the river so close things could get to Mount Vernon much faster than if you lived further inland. There wasn’t a road system back in the 1800 so the closer you lived to the water the better.
