The Lincoln Monument Association was made by the US Congress in March 1867 to build a memorial to Lincoln. Very little progress was made until the spot was chosen in 1901. At the time the area was a swampland. The first stone was not put into place until February 12 1915.In May 20 1922 the memorial was dedicated by Warren G. Harding along with him was Lincoln’s only surviving child ,Robert Todd Lincoln.
The man who shot Lincoln was John Wilkes Booth. He was an actor at the Fords Theater. He had 13 shows there. He shot President Lincoln on Nov. 9th 1863; when he was playing in Our American Cousin. Booth ended his full-time stage career in May of 1864. Booth was born on May 10, 1838 in a log house.
The theater that Lincoln was shot in is called the Fords Theater. Lincoln was sitting in the “State Box”. This is where Booth shot Lincoln in the head. Then he jumped down onto the stage and cried out "Sic semper tyrannis" which is the Virginia State Motto, witch means thus always to tyrants . Booth escaped through the ally. In the mean time Lincoln was being taken across the street to be cared for. Lincoln died April 15,1865
