Information about the Iwo Jima

Iwo Jima Memorial is located near Arlington Cemetery across the Potomac River in Washington, D.C., which is six blocks from Rosslyn Metro station.  The Iwo Jima Monument memorializes the most famous incidents in World War II in 1944.  Including all of the men who gave their lives in defense of the United States since 1775.  It is open daily, 24 hours with no admission.  The Marine Corps presents the Marine Sunset Review Parade featuring the Drum and Bugle Corp and the Silent Drill Team. This show only takes place on Tuesdays from 7:00 p.m. to 8:30 p.m., May through August. It is free to the public.  This monument is the largest cast-bronze statue in the world.
Joseph Petrovics sculpted the Iwo Jima Memorial Monument.  When it took three years to construct the monument in Brooklyn, N.Y.  The cast-bronze statue weighed nearly twenty tons.  The statue consists of 32-foot-tall figures and a 60-foot-tall flagpole.  Three of the men who raised the flag were killed before the battle was even over.  Two of the figures are carrying a rifle on display.  The rifles are 12 and 16 feet long, respectively.  The entire cost of the statue and developing the memorial site was a total of $850,000.  There were no public funds used towards the statue.  All the money came from friends of the Marine Corps, members of the Naval Service, and United States Marines.
The island of Iwo Jima is located approximately 650 miles south of Tokyo, Japan.  Iwo Jima is approximately 2 miles wide, 4 miles long, and 8 square miles.  In World War II, one-third of the marines killed were killed on the island of Iwo Jima.   The battle of Iwo Jima was the highest in casualties.  Over 132 Americans were killed but unidentifiable and was listed as “unknown”.  This battle of Iwo Jima was fought between the United States and Imperial Japan during February and March of 1945.
