Information about the Holocaust Museum

The Holocaust was an event where the Nazi's murdered approximately six million Jews.  “Holocaust” is a word of Greek origin meaning “sacrifice by fire.”  The Nazi’s came to power in January 1933 and in that time the Jewish population was over nine million.

By 1945, almost two out of every three Jews were killed as part of the “Final Solution”.  Almost 200,000 mentally or physically disabled people were murdered in the Euthanasia Program.  Many people died of starvation, disease, neglect, or maltreatment.

Nazi’s established concentration camps to imprison Jews and anyone that was hated by the Nazi’s. They also came up with Einsatzgruppen, which were mobile killing units. These units murdered more than one million Jewish men, woman, and children.

After the Holocaust many of the survivors found shelter in displaced persons camps.  Between 1948 and 1951, most of the Jews emigrated.  Some went to Israel and others went to the United States and other nations.  The last displaced persons camp was closed in 1957.  The crimes committed during the Holocaust devastated many European Jewish communities.
