Information about the National Museum of the American Indian

There are three facilities that make up the National Museum of the American Indian (NMAI) . Those facilities locations are: Washington D.C., Suitland ,Maryland, and New York City.  The newest addition to the organization is the museum in Washington, this is the National Museum of the American Indian on the National Mall.  It open in September 21, 2004.            The museum is a 250,000 square foot beautifully sculpted building.  It is made out of a golden-sand colored limestone that has been shaped by wind, water, and time.  This is also the first museum exclusively dedicated to Native Americans.  The museum sits on a 4.25 acre eastern lowland landscape and includes a scenic water feature.  NMAI on the National Mall provides a variety of performances throughout the year such as, film and video screening, school group programs, and living cultural presentations.
The museum’s project designer and architect is Douglas J. Cardinal a Blackfoot Indian of Ottawa ,Canada.  Design architects are GBQC architects of Philadelphia, and architect John Paul Jones a Cherokee/Choctaw Indian.  There were disagreements during the construction of the museum which led to Douglas Cardinal being removed from the project, but his design was still used on the museum.  Even though he was removed from the project he kept giving advice to the constructers and his advice certainly helped in the completion of the museum.  The project architects were Jones & Jones Architects, Landscape Architects Ltd. of Seattle and Smith Group of Washington, D.C. which they also worked with Lou Weller a Caddo Indian and the Native American Design Collaborative.  Also, Polshek  Partnership Architects from New York City and Ramona Sakiestewa a (Hopi Indian) and Donna House (Navajo/Oneida) helped in serving as  design consultants.  The museums landscape architects  were Jones & Jones Architects and Landscape Architects Ltd.

The American Indian society were the leaders in the construction and designing of the museum, and succeeded in creating a different atmosphere and style from European and Euro-American museum.  I believe that this museum greatly and respectively represents the native American culture. I am glad that people will be able to learn and see the native American culture.  Donna House, the Navajo and Oneida Indian who supervised the landscaping has said, “The landscape flows into the building, and the environment is who we are.  We are the trees, we are the rocks, we are the water.  And that had to be part of the museum.”
