Information about the White House

600 Pennsylvania Ave., NW Washington DC ; Tel. 202.619.7255

As a historical symbol in Washington D.C., the White House, or the President’s Palace, is very important to the nation.  It has been the home of U.S. presidents since the eighteenth century, and is the home of George Bush today.  It has been standing for two hundred years and began as a part of government when President George Washington signed an Act of Congress in December 1790.  During the war of 1812, British troops set the White House on fire on August 4, 1814.  This destroyed most of the interior, which was restored to fit the original looks.  The West Wing also caught fire in 1929 when Herbert Hoover was President.

The White House’s construction was started in October of 1792, supervised by Hoban, the architect.  Even though nearly completed in 1800, the first residents were President John Adams and his wife Abigail.  Each president has made his own changes and traditions and the home is open to public.  The White House has many rooms with different settings.  Some of them receive their names from the textiles used for draperies, such as the Blue, Green, and Red Rooms.  The East Room is the largest room in the building, which is used for state receptions and balls.  It is also used for large gatherings and retains the late eighteenth century style architecture.  The Blue Room is where the president receives guests at state dinners.  The Green Room is used for formal receptions.  The Red Room is where the first lady receives guests and was refurbished in 2000 with the American Empire style.  The State Dinning Room is used for formal dinners.

The White House is also made up of different floors.  Private apartments of the presidents occupy the second floor, guest floors on the third, and the other rooms on the ground floor.  These consist of cloakrooms, a china room, the kitchen, and the library.
