Information about the Vietnam Veterans Memorial

The Vietnam Memorial is a very touching memorial. Many people  go there every year to see the 58,235 names on the black wall.  There are many memorials surrounding the Vietnam Memorial.  You see the Korean War memorial on your right and also the Lincoln Memorial.  These are also touching memorials but in my opinion the Vietnam Memorial tugs on your heartstrings like no other memorial in the city.
From my personal experience, by walking through the memorial, you get a different feeling than the others.  Maybe it is because of the 59,000 names on the wall, or because family and friends come to this wall and lay flowers, alcohol, cigarettes, and other items that remind them of their loved ones.  The names on the wall are in order by sections.  It is very shocking to look at the long list of names and all of the sections that are on the wall.  This war was a very big loss to the United States.
The war did a lot of damage to the people who survived.  I knew of a man that served Vietnam. He did two tours and was in prison at one point.  He started drinking in Vietnam because of all the killing.  It was making him insane. He told me about how his name was on the wall but would not tell me for what reason. When I went to the wall, I looked up his name and there it was.
I never gave it much thought until I started researching the project on how people's lives were affected. At the time period this war happened, everybody that served in Vietnam had a story to tell.  Some men didn't do a lot of fighting. Others died over in that far away country. The question is, "why?". They died for us, the United States. I believe that not very many people think about Vietnam or the people that were in it. Not many people have seen what I saw when I went to the memorial. I think that if everyone who hasn't seen the memorial went, they would have more respect for the Vietnam Vets in their town.
