Information about the National Air and Space Museum

When the National Air Museum was created, it was created as a separate bureau of the Smithsonian Institution by an act of congress. Twenty years later it was called the National Air and Space Museum. It opened July first to the public. This collection dated back to the closing of the Centennial Exposition in 1876, in Philadelphia, which was a well-known public exhibit. The first object added to the collection was the Stringfellow Engine from 1889.  The space age began in the 1950's and 1960's, which helped in the naming of the museum.
In November 1972, work on the new building continued on two parts, the actual building of the structure and work by the staff on the exhibition halls which ended up to be around 12 halls in all.  They moved into the museum in 1975.  The opening celebration was held on July 1, 1976. This was a way of giving to the Bicentennial celebration.
In the 1980's, the Smithsonian Institute directed their attention more on research projects.  They became caretakers or curators for public programs in the form of lectures as well as the NASM Archives were created.
