Through all walks of life, people come to be inspired with the spirit of President Lincoln's determination to save the Union and tremendous compassion towards those who had been denied their freedom. Maybe the reason the Lincoln Memorial holds such a special place in the hearts of all Americans is because it serves as a place to celebrate things that unite us as a nation, as well as a place to focus on the things that still divide us today. As a powerful symbol of American democracy, the memorial continues to inspire the world with its simple and dignified message of freedom.

Born on February 12th, 1809, Lincoln had no formal education. No president has ever started from more humble beginnings that Abraham Lincoln. Lincoln's mother, brother, and sister died by the time he was twenty-one.

One of Lincoln's neighbors described the house Lincoln and his family lived in as  "a hunters hut not fit to be called home." The home had a dirt floor, one small window and a chimney made of packed clay. Lincoln slept on a mattress made of a pile of leaves, twigs and animal skins. Abraham Lincoln lived this way until he was a young man. While his parents could not provide many material needs, they did give him a loving home that helped foster the compassion and concern for others that made him an outstanding president. The Lincoln family moved often and in 1816 relocated from Kentucky to Indiana in order to live in a state that did not allow slavery. Abraham's sensitivity to social injustice was apparent early in life. Lincoln's mother provided what education he had.

Lincoln married Mary Todd in 1842. Mary provided love and support and found him to be a wonderful father to their 4 sons. Lincoln lost two sons at the ages of 4 and 12; from depression and a potentially fatal abnormality called Marfan Syndrome. By the 1850's Lincoln was one of the most respected attorneys in Illinois. The majority of his work by then was in the state's Supreme Court where he participated in over 240 cases, with most of them wins.
