Answers to Fact or Fiction
Information about the
Korean Memorial
Between the
three years of 1950 to 1953, the United States joined the United Nations in
South Korea to stand up to the North Koreans to try to stop an invasion.
At the end of the war, one and a half million Americans returned to
their country, families, homes, and their jobs.
All those who didn’t serve in Korea were reluctant to view it as
more than a simple conflict. But
to the men and women who risked their lives for another country, the war
will never be forgotten.
If
you looked at the memorial from above, it looks like a circle intersected by
a triangle. Going up to the
memorial, visitors first come to the triangle shaped Field of Service.
A group of nineteen stainless steel statues show members of the Air
Force, Army, Marines, and Navy. Ponchos
worn by the statues tell of the harsh weather.
On
the south side is a granite wall. It’s
polished surface reflects the statues and shows the actual faces of soldiers
that fought in the war. There
you can see soldiers, sailors, airmen, and marines.
The
Pool of Remembrance, circled by trees, provides a peaceful place to remember
those who gave their lives in the war.
Carved in stone nearby are the numbers of those killed, wounded,
missing in action, and held prisoner-of-war.
Across from this, another granite wall shows a message lain in
silver: "Freedom is Not Free".
