The Jefferson is a huge statue that is as important as the man it represents.  Thomas Jefferson is cast in a bronze statue, 19-feet tall and weighing in at five tons, Rudolph Evens worked on the interior of the Jefferson Memorial. Jefferson’s role in the American Revolution was nearly as important as George Washington. Jefferson also wrote the Declaration of Independence while serving in the Continental Congress and the Virginia Legislature. In the Museum of American History, there is a small lap desk on which Jefferson wrote the Declaration of Independence.  The Declaration of Independence itself rest next to the Constitution in the National Archives. All of these are in walking distance of the Jefferson Memorial. Jefferson also helped Benjamin Franklin become a Minister to France and witnessed the downfall of the French Revolution. Before being elected to the Oval Office, Jefferson served as Secretary of State and Vice President of the United States.
The Jefferson Memorial was finished in 1943 after five years of construction. It was patterned after the Pantheon in Rome.  On the outside, the Jefferson Memorial is made of marble from the State of Vermont and white marble from Georgia lines the walls. The statue of Jefferson sits on Minnesota marble and is surrounded by pink marble from Tennessee. Also when the Jefferson was finished, it was known as the "Jefferson Muffin".
