The Arlington National Cemetery is located in Arlington Virginia.  There have been over four million visitors to the Arlington Cemetery as of today.   It is 200 acres long and has 260,000 people buried there.  This is also the resting-place for some of our country's presidents like William Howard Taft and John F. Kennedy.  Kennedy's wife, Jackie Bouvier Kennedy Onassis as well as Robert Kennedy are buried here. What makes Kennedy's grave unique is the eternal flame, which burns uninterrupted.

There are veterans buried at Arlington from the American Revolution through the Persian War.  In section 27, there are more than 3,800 former slaves.  The Department of the Army manages the cemetery. Funerals average about 20 a day.  The cemetery helps family members remember loved ones that have died trying to help our country.   Men and women who have died in operation Iraqi freedom, and the tragedy of the Columbia, which crashed in Houston, Texas on February 4, 2003, are also buried there.  At the following web site you can view the Pentagon in the background from Arlington Cemetery.  It displays the Pentagon still smoldering from the 9-11 attack.

 www.arlingtoncemetery.net

Arlington is the only cemetery of more than 100 national cemeteries that is administered by the Army.  The Tomb of the Unknown Soldiers is also found at the Cemetery.  This is especially an attraction to visitors.  It is constructed of white marble inscribed with Greek figures representing peace, victory, and valor.  There are soldiers represented from WWI, WWII, Korea, and the Vietnam War. There is a continual guard on watch at the sarcophagus 24 hrs. a day, 365 days a year which changes in shifts no matter the weather,.  From Oct. 1st to March 31st the guard is changed every hour on the hour.  From April 1st to September 30th the guard is changed every half hour and creates more chances for onlookers to view the changing.  From April 1st to September 30th the closing time changes from 5 to 7 p.m.
