Information about the White House
Construction of the White House began when the first cornerstone was laid in October of 1792. There are 132 rooms, 35 bathrooms, and 6 levels in the White House. There are also 412 doors, 147, windows, 28 fireplaces, 8 stair cases, and 3 elevators. President Washington Watched over the construction of the house but he never lived in it. It was not until the year 1800, when the White House was nearly completed, that President John Adams and his wife moved in. They were the first people to live in the White House.
The White House survived a fire in 1814 and another in the west wing in 1929. Presidents can express their individual style in how they decorate some parts of the house. Thomas Jefferson held the first open house in 1805. Some people that attended the swearing in ceremony at the U.S. Capitol , followed him home. He greeted them in the blue room. Then he open the house for public tours. It stayed open except at wartime.
After Abraham Lincoln’s presidency, inaugural crowds became far too large for the White House to accommodate them comfortably. But not until Crower Cleveland’s first presidency did not change. He held a presidential review of the troops from a flag draped grandstand built in front of the White House. Receptions on New Year’s Day and the Fourth of July continued to be held until the early 1930s.
In Washington D.C. you cannot really see the White House that well. The best view is from the Washington Monument.
