Information about The Vietnam Wall
The Veterans Memorial Funds
raised about 9,000,000 dollars for the memorial. More than
275,000 individual Americans, private contributions from
corporations, foundations, and veterans paid for the memorial.
In
October 1980 the Veterans Memorial Funds committee had a
contest for the designs of the wall. The criteria required
was: be reflective, harmonize with its surroundings, contain
the names of those who had died in the conflict or who were
still missing, and make no political statement about the war.
The winner of the contest was a girl named Maya Ying Lin of
Yale University. The winning design was like a park in a park.
On March 11,1982, the plans
were sent to be approved by the Federal government. On the day
of March 16, 1982, work began on the site. The wall and the
statue were finished and put together on the day of November
1, 1982. The Vietnam Wall is located in Washington D.C., at
Constitution Avenue between 21st and 23rd
Streets, NW. The opening ceremony was on November 11,1984.
The official name for the
"wall", or the VVM, is the Vietnam Veterans
Memorial. Three bronze statues of young soldiers who stand by
the memorial are called "The Three Servicemen".
Another statue is of two women nurses holding a wounded
solider. Some people might think that the "wall" is
a war memorial for the war, but it is not, it is a memorial
for those who served in the war.
The
names that are on the wall were sent from the families of the
soldiers. Since there are over 58,000 names on the wall it is
almost impossible to find a particular name without the
guidebooks. So you look for the year that your person died in
the guidebooks and look in that column until you find the
name.
I
felt so sad at this particular site because it was so moving.
You couldn't yell or be loud at this Memorial, because it
would be very disrespectful. Everyone tried to get or got a
sketching of a name from the wall. This was one of my favorite
sites that I visited.
