Information about the U.S.S. Constellation

The U.S.S. Constellation is a 38-gun frigate and was built in 1797. The purpose of a
frigate was to destroy or capture warships and ships who were carrying slaves from
Africa to America. The Constellation has a length of 186 ft, with of 164 ft, and a 40 ft 6in
beam. The Constellation was the first U.S. Navy vessel to bear the name Constellation
and earned the nickname "Yankee Racehorse" by capturing a French 36-gun frigate in
1799.
The Constellation is one of the last remaining war ships. The Constellation served in
the Civil War, World War I (WWI), and World War II (WWII). It was the first ship to
capture a foreign French warship in Feb. 9 1799. The Constellation helped with the end
of slavery by helping capture ships that were carrying slaves. The Constellation captured
a slave brig name "The Triton" on May 21 1799 and it was the U.S. Navy's first capture
of the Civil War. In WWII it served as a flagship for the U.S. Navy.
The Constellation was originally launched in Baltimore and it remains a historic
landmark in Baltimore Harbor in Washington D.C. It took 3 years and 8 months to
restore the U.S.S. Constellation.
