Word Problems

The National Art Museum (NAM) of Washington, D.C. holds art work from as far back as Leonardo da Vinci.  These paintings cost nearly one million a piece and sometimes more.  The entire NAM is made up of nothing but rooms the size of an average class room.  Each room has one security guard watching every move you make.  They also have a set of cameras for each piece of art work coming from every angle.

  • If each room consist of 8 pieces of art and every set of camera consists of 5 in all for each piece of art work, then how many cameras are in the whole room?
  • It costs $7.00 for one all access ticket.  If each room on the second floor has five different rooms and there is a different guard in each room and each guard changes rooms every 2.5 hrs and you stay in the museum for 10 hrs how many times will the guards change?  and how much money will you have to pay?
  • A group of 20 children and adults are going to The National Gallery of Art Sculpture Garden ice-skating rink on March 15.  Adults cost $5.50, children cost $4.50, and skate rental is $2.50.  If the group spends a total of $145.00 on the trip.  How many children are going?  How many adults are going?  And how much do they cost?  How much did they pay for skates in all?

  1. If the distance to get from the Sculpture Garden to the Capitol is 1/4 of a mile and you walk at a rate of two miles per hour, how long will it take you to get from the Capitol to the Sculpture Garden?
  2. If Stieglitz had created 1642 photographs in his career and 100 had never been exhibited what percent of his artwork was never shown?
  3. If the Sculpture Garden is open Monday through Saturday from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. and Sunday from 11:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m., how many hours is the Sculpture Garden open in a week?
