The following was contributed by Richie ('02)

  1. If The radius of a hot air balloon is 23 ft, what is the surface area? (hint: formula for surface area= 4 x 3.14 x Radius squared)
  2. If we were walking at 2 mph to get to the National Air and Space Museum from the Ford's Theatre and that is a distance of 12 miles (just a scenario), how long would it take us?
  3. If a rocket ship traveling at 1600 mph to the moon which is 128,000 miles away (just a scenario), how long will it take the rocket to fly there and back?

The following was contributed by Gregory ('03)

  1. You are at the National Air and Space Museum and your tour group wants to watch some of the shows. A single show costs $7.50 for adults and $6.00 for youth and senior citizens. For the double feature, the adult ticket is $3.50 more than the single show. For the youth and senior citizen ticket, it is $2.00 more for the double feature. What would be the total cost if you had three adults and three kids that want to see a single show and two adults, four kids, and one senior citizen wanting to see the double feature?
  2. If a commercial airliner is traveling at 400 miles per hour and is traveling to Japan, which is 200,000 miles away (scenario), how many minutes will it take to reach Japan?
  3. The Air and Space Museum is open from 10:00 A.M. to 5:30 P.M. The museum contains 23 main exhibits. If 250 people visit the museum every 15 minutes, how many people enter the museum daily?

Information about the National Air and Space Museum

Original Wright Plane.jpg (79730 bytes)
Original Wright Plane

The National Air and Space Museum in Washington D.C. contains the largest collection of aerobatics and astronomical facts and models in the world.  Also, it is an important center for research, history, science, and technology in aviation and space exploration.  It presents over a hundred artifacts on display and original models of important flights.  The museum has 30,000 aviation and 9,000 space artifacts including the original Wright Flyer and the Apollo 11 Command Module.  Also, engines, rockets, uniforms, spacesuits, artwork, balloons, documents, manuscripts, and photographs are all ready for viewing.
The museum opens at 10:00 a.m. and closes at 5:30 p.m. except in the summer months hen it opens at 9:00 a.m. and closes at 5:30 p.m.  It is open everyday except for Dec. 25th and general admission is free of charge.
Tours include free Docent-led tours, audio tours, the Garber Preservation, Restoration and Storage Facility Reserved tours, and the Albert Einstein Planetarium tour.
While at the Air and Space Museum you can take part in lectures and other events, depending on what is taking place that day.
At the Smithsonian you can touch actual rocks that have been brought back from the moon.  This lunar rock was retrieved from a larger rock on the Apollo 17-space mission in December 1972.  It is close to four billion years old and contains large amounts of iron.  Scientists have identified this rock as “basalt”.  You can find this extraordinary artifact in the Milestones of Flight Gallery.
Also, at the Institution, there is a complete timeline of historic flights. The timeline includes the 1903 Wright brother flight up to the 1999 Breitling Orbiter 3 Gondola, which was the first balloon to orbit the Earth.
The museum also has restaurants inside the building.  In fact the new Wright Place Restaurant is now open.  Its menu offers food from Donatos Pizzeria, McDonald’s, and Boston markets.
The National Air and Space Museum is located on the National Mall at 7th and Independence Ave., SW, Washington, D.C., west of the Capitol building.
